Guest guest
A new student who hopefully will introduce herself shortly has clients with thrush - three of women with babies coming to the yoga studio. In reviewing my materials, we have much good info in the files, but this also showed itself from my resources, so I offer it up into the collection. As I am not doing much clinical work and rarely had this come up, others will have to share their client successes - please! Our training notes in the PPC (postpartum Counseling) collection include 3 pages on candida with some notes on thrush, such as Dr. Lad's formula for babies. He says it is often linked to diabetes in the family, means breast milk may be too sweet also. Mix the following with mothers milk, give ¼ tsp TID (3x daily): equal parts: Vidanga, Shardunika and daruharidra (antifungal I have not heard of). I was given this previous info in a seminar with him. In the Essential Oils Desk Reference listed under Candida, page 299 3rd edition, is some detail on many essential oils which may be used for infant thrush. Please I must always give warning to safe use, which is found at http://www.sacredwindow.com/EO-Basics.html . In the desk reference, Exact protocol is not given, some listed eoils included in formula below. The following 7 tipssummary are also offered for combating systemic candida, which is a good assumption if thrush manifests, on mother's nipples, babies mouth, or any woman vaginally. 1. Alkalyze 2. Reduce yeast creating foods including all acid forming foods, and especially yeasted breads, fermented foods such as pickles, miso and cheeses (fermented ones especially). 3. Reduce stress 4. Reduce antibiotic exposure 5. Support thyroid function 6. Increase Agni/digestive fire (alternative medicine uses enzymes, Ayurveda supports the rekindling of our own) 7. Use Pre and Probiotics. Prebiotic note humble FOS (fructo-oligo-saccrides) are quite valuable (available in some stevia preparations such as " Stevia Select " sold by Young Living. There may be a similar product sold in health food stores, but not sure if includes FOS. The pro-bios such as acidophilis. If it was my baby, I would do something like this if Dr. Caldecott's yoghurt/whey swab and other methods were insufficient. 5 parts Melaleuca Ericafolia (gentler variety of tea tree, great for children, avail from Young Living) 5 parts Roman Chamomile 3 parts Immupower (blend, Young Living) 2 Parts each: Rosewood, Rosemary Cineol, Bergamot Much care must be taken with the bergamot not to be applied where the sun will shine on skin for 72 hours in order to avoid a severe burn. (If well diluted, the probability is some tanning instead.) Total parts is 20 (about 2/3 tsp, tsp counting about 36 drops). Using this many drops to 1 Tbs 2 tsp carrier oil – sesame, flax like that mix well in jar to how many days to be taken at 3X daily, 3 drops internal and wipe the mouth with 2 more. 7 – 10 days or as longer than " needed " . I would undoubtedly have systemic yeast as well if my baby did, and so be advised to wisely take ½ tsp 3X daily for 5 – 15 days. Jessica Wild, hostess of an essential oils group called wildharvest with years experience and amazing results with them, favors frankincense oil neet (straight) appied inside baby's mouth; does not sting. She unfortunately does not have ayurveda with which to answer broader and more enduring needs. Looks like we have many options from which to make a good set of protocols in service to diverse population needs. Martha
Guest guest
Hello all: I am new to this group - very nice to meet you all! My name is Cora, I am a Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner and I have just begun training as a postpartum doula with Martha. I am currently working with a mother who has recurring thrush and I would love to hear all possible feedback on the topic (Martha, thanks so much for your guidance below!). Both she and babe are on their 3rd round of antibiotics and I am very worried about both! What are your experiences with diet, herbs and oils to treat and prevent? How about rebuilding intestinal flora in the baby after so many antibiotics? I meet with the mother and baby this week and will send more details on her condition then. In the meantime thanks for any more thoughts or info. you might have... Guest guest
Hi Cora; You have your hands full, sounds like, already! I'm not up currently on the best probiotics for babies, but am sure Vicki or Adrienne knows ....? Definitely part of the program. I was just reading the product catalogue for FLora brand which is usually such excellent products, but their baby probiotics (and adult) are all dairy free, which according to Dr. Gary Young's research will not implant/grow in the colon; one has to keep giving it. I would be careful of that factor when choosing. Martha
