Guest guest
I don't have a handout on the computer, so I will have to type up one based on all the handouts I have gathered. Let me give you a brief synopsis of the standard treatments now among lactation consultants with a little of my own opinion added. You have to treat both the mom and babe. Start with Gential violet 1% once a day for 4-7 days, no longer, it's in an alcohol base and will ulcerate the baby's mouth eventually. Dip a Q-tip in the stuff and let the baby suck on it, be sure and get the inner cheeks and tongue. Then put the baby to the breast so moms nipples get a treatment too. Boil all artificial nipples in water with vinegar added. next add Dr. Jack Newman's all-purpose nipple ointment found in compounding pharmacies. Get the ingredients off of his web site. Just type in Jack Newman. Next try Grapefruit seed extract 250 mg 3x a day orally by the mother. A site with info about this stuff is www.nutriteam.com/gse.htm. During this have mom eat lots of garlic and coconut oil and drink kefir, probiotics, drop sugar, eat yogurt. expose nipples to sunlight, rinse them with a vinegar solution. Next add fluconazole 400 mg loading dose to the teatment, then 100 mg twice daily for at least 2 weeks, unti lthe mother is pain free for a week. During all this go ahead and take a supplement of high dose acidophilus 1 cap 2-3 times daily or BioK 1/2 a pot daily. Put on baby's tongue and mother take orally too. Baby dose of fluconazole is 6 mg/kg loading, then 3 mg/kg/day as a single dose. Guest guest
Oops, we crossed in the mail sorta (I hadn't read your latest). Thanks so much, Vicky, for taking the time. And good luck making natural waves in your new job This sounds like a well tested protocol and even though my instinct is to find one more natural, it is such a debilitating experience for mothers they tend to want to quit breastfeeding! So better to get them clear of the candida. If it was me, I would be studying the dosages of essential oils, and choosing ones less intense during the initial days unless I was a kapha body type. I'm also wondering about a coconut/neem oil and chamomile oil balm for the nipples, something like that. OUtside of the perinatal circles I hear good successes for people taking capsules I beleive it is 3X daily of oregano/thyme oils, or Thieves blend oil, and other things which have worked. I know that Roman Chamomile is also anticandida, and would be inclined to use this with a little of a stronger one, and use muscle testing along with doshic evaluations to determine dosage, with a willing client. Along with the gentian violet. Anyone else have input here? I'd really like to hear it, as the scary named products will send some moms into a tizzy ... Guest guest
Thanks for those suggestions, I would love to have a good tested ayurvedic protocol for yeast. Even with these heavy duty drugs, it can take months to get rid of it. So I would hate to take a lot of time trying this and that. Guest guest
Hi all~ I had terrible candida in my nipples after my first son was born. I was on Diflucan 200mg per day for 4 months, taking multivitamins, taking Vit C, taking Garlic tablets, probiotics, etc. I gave up all sugars, all starches, all vinegars, all condiments, all fruits and the list goes on. I didn't know of the oils until eight months later. I suffered with it for about 4 months. It was finally the Genetian Violet that kicked it out. BUT I wouldn't do any the before mentioned things now (except for probiotics). The Genetian Violet was terrible on my son's face~eating away at the skin. It would just rub off my nipples onto his cheeks. He had no thrush at all. I also believe the Diflucan hurt my liver although I never went and got tested. I am still yeast sensitive and if I ate wrong for an extended amount of time it would most definately flare back up. I enjoy fresh fruit everyday though and don't have to worry about that effecting me. Coconut oil is very good however, I used that for initial breast irritation after my second son was born and he seemed bothered by the smell of it on my nipples. It must have been too strong for him. I have recommended it to others though and it has worked nicely for them. I know that the sense of smell is very strong in an infant and it seemed to interfere with that. I think taking it internally may be better. I have used Geranium essential oil for Mastitis prevention and this also is good for candida. The oils suggested for candida are Melaleuca alternifolia, Melissa (more effective than lavender or rosemary), Eucalyptus citriodora, Patchouli, Oregano (due to the carvacrol content), Cinnamon, Vetiver and Sandalwood as well as Ylang Ylang, Juniper Berry and Lemongrass. This is from Clinical Aromatherapy for Pregnancy and Childbirth by Denise Tiran. I hope this helps some! Sandy
Guest guest
Oral fluconazole for ductal mammary candidosis typically is given in a loading dose of 200-400 mg followed by 100-200mg/day for 14 to 28 days. And they say half that dose is probably enough for many women. It's the oral med preferred during lactation because of low milk levels and minimal toxicity. However, it is an expensive med. Taken orally, all antifungal azoles may cause asymptomatic elevations in liver function tests and many have significant interactions with other drugs. Grapefruit seed extract might have worked for you. Orally and directly on the nipples. Other things to try are: glycerin based golden seal, caprylic acid 2 caps twice a day, bifidus, vitamin A and zinc for immunity.. Rinse bras with 1/4 c vinegar in laundry. After feeding rinse nipples with 1 t white distilled vinegar in a cup of water. Wip0e babies bottom with same solution. If your water is chlorinated, fill a pitcher with water and let it sit for 12 hours lightly covered and the chlorine will be dissipated. The chlorine may reduce some of the bacteria that you're trying to restore.Read Homeopathy for Pregnancy, Birth and Babies First Year. Clean bra and bra pads, boil breast pump parts. Garlic 2 cloves a day. The gentian violet is based in alcohol and will ulcerate a baby's skin if used long enough. Be sure to use 1/2 % only once per day for 3-7 days. Guest guest
Dear Sandy; Thanks very much for this information. I have not searched the forums where this information would be also found, have you? Please share what you know about dosages, topical/oral, dilutions, frequency, and quality reminders? If anyone knows even some ayurvedic protocols, the opportunity exists as we share together to create a really comprehensive one combining the best of all with when to choose what options. It will be valuable to discuss doshic factors on the use of the oils and I invite all my students to put in their understanding, once we have the use protocol basics on the table.
