Guest guest
thank you, this is very interesting. just an fyi about the milk consumption recommendation...some vegans can start to have problems with painful gas by suddenly introducing dairy (even boiled), especially if they haven't had milk for a very long time. also, there is a tidbit in this article about lactation and drinking milk. http://www.lalecheleague.org/NB/NBMarApr04p44.html ~rachel Thank you, Rachel; The milk issue is a lively one in Ayurvedic circles. I see more often than not by significant margin people think they are lactose intolerant and they arern't really. It is about what quality, form and combination it is taken more often. So based on this experience, and the observation so many times over that confirms for many what Ayurvedic texts say: " COW's milk, properly used, is the most rejuvenative food on the planet. " (well, not counting Mother's milk, of COURSE!). Anyway, so on that basis I lean first to check out the options. My vegan clients more often than not are feeling something missing, needing some soothing rejuvenative nourishment, and almost always respond well to properly introduced cow's milk for themselves. And a few, vegan and carnivore alike, still have problems. So this woman was DEFINITELY in that category. She was having so many problems physiologically and, the anxiety and perfectionism (of first time mom) was particularly high. It was difficult to help her from such a distance, never getting to see her in person and make all those assessments we might normally. But she keeps calling me for support (don't know if I've ever gotten paid, her affiliation with her ashram gives promises of teaching business in the future she says). I was very happy to find the doctor today and that they can meet in 2 days! If the castor oil gets forstalled, I suppose. I read the LLL article - lots of good info. I always want to put in my 2 cents or more ... llike for instance the reason breast milk is so easily produced regardless of a mother's situation almost, has to do with the sequence of digestion. Plasma is the first tissue made from our food and liquid intake, and out of Plasma we make breast milk! I hear the argument also about we are the only species which after weaning drinks milk - and of other animals! Yet this is ignored in ref our use of cheeses which are matter of factly encouraged for many. Dr. Saraswati Buhrman in Boulder has studied the ethnicity of milk digesting enzymes, finds like the upper European genetically quite suited, other populatoins where it looks natural in terms of their other food sources, climate, etc. Intersting. I also have to refer to the proper use inclusive of proper quality, prayers, and respect for the source. In Ayurveda's homeland, the family cow is a beloved member of the family. Would that we could more quickly get back to this! Even just taking cold milk - or cold anything postpartum can give cramping too; the digestive system is very fragile. PS; Ayurveda has an herbal decoction protocol for reversing lactose intollerance. I don't know the success rate tho. Martha
