Guest guest
Hakim Shiva <hakim my client is 5 months pregnant: 1. Is basti okay, at this stage of pregnancy? 2. how much oil can she have applied in abhyanga and are there places that should be avoided in the massage? 2. She will be on her back for an hour in the abhyanga, should the therapist have the client on her side instead? 3. Are any of the oils contraindicated for pregnancy (is mahanarayana fine, and what about lavendar/tea tree/ylang ylang, what do you recommend? om, Hakim Dear Hakim; Per your ok I'm posting this and sending from the site; here's a re- invite to join us . Blessings, Dear One, always good to hear from you. Please introduce yourself briefly to the group when you sign on to our group, ok? 1) I must remind you I am not trained as a vaidya (ayurvedic physician, and my specialty is postpartum. So my certainty is not there about the basti (herbalized enema). Even the small herbalized oil one I would be hesitant to do, as it increases apana pran (the downward action of elimination, menstruation and childbirth, which in delicate ones can stimulate miscarriage). I believe it is contra indicated; is she constipated? Encourage perhaps her frequent use of stewed apple with a little clove (warm) and raisins, also other soaked/stewed dried fruits of choice, and ample fresh sweet fruits. 2. SHe should enjoy daily ayurvedic massage, self administered (teach her a simple version) when she is not having someone do it for her. Positioning as there becomes weight on her central artery is to place a little pillow under one hip so she is slightly leaning to side; then she can also take side lying positions. Some therapists have pregnancy tables with holes! I would be careful the massage is less vigorous than abyianga (ayurvedic oil massage) used in the Panchakarma cleanse, especially as taught at the ayurvedic institute. It is particularly vigorous. 3. Of course she can in self massage oil her perineum and the breasts and belly will benefit a great deal from massage and essential oils of lavender, ylang ylang and geranium among others for the skin. Young living Essential oils has a wonderful blend called Gentle Baby for avoiding stretch marks. Dr. Lad has references too in his home remedies book; I'm short on time or would delightedly reference for you. How about reporting back as you find these? Easy on the castor oil, otherwise all these ayurvedic massage oils are fine. Mahanarayan if indicated, otherwise use the herb bala in sesame or as appropriate for her bodytype and season. She is definitely in vata time, though it may be pushing her pitta and whatever else you have assessed. Tea tree if indicated, almost all the therapeutic grade essential oils are fine and this should stim some conversation - clary sage is wonderful for her hormonal balance often.
