The Man Behind The Vaccine Mystery

WASHINGTON, Dec. 12, 2002

 

(CBS) It's been a mystery in Washington for weeks. Just before President

Bush signed the homeland security bill into law an unknown member of

Congress inserted a provision into the legislation that blocks lawsuits

against the maker of a controversial vaccine preservative called

" thimerosal, " used in vaccines that are given to children.

Once upon a time in a hidden galaxy far away, people lived in great fear

of many dangers.

The people in this sorrowful land could no longer trust their

politicians and government bureaucrats to ensure their well-being, nor

could the people trust their corporate leaders.

The era of Good Will and Social Responsibility had ended. Political

corruption, greed and obsession with morals had claimed this land with a

vengeance.

This haunted place where no one felt secure came to be widely known

as Safety Last. And on this lonely speck in distant space, concern about

dangers to health multiplied each and every month.

 

*Poisons and Loss of Trust*

The people worried that their prescription medications were unsafe. They

suspected that most of their advanced medical treatments were poorly

tested and ineffective, and that the food they ate was poisoned with

toxic substances and strange microbes.

Thus the citizens of Safety Last no longer trusted most doctors.

Many doctors had become enslaved handmaidens to the purveyors of

prescription drugs, medical treatments and foodstuffs. The pursuit of

bushels of money and fame had become the new medical mantra.

Legend has it that before the time of the Great Event, some people

still stubbornly believed in the good will and social responsibility of

their Protectors. But in their hearts, they sensed they were living a

life of fantasy.
