Guest guest
Sunny, Calendula is one of the herbs I grow and make medicines with for my patients. If anyone is interested email me @ aesculapius_ca The following is an article I wrote. Rand Smith, Master Herbalist The Gentle Power of Calendula Calendula officinalis has to be my favorite plant, not only because it's so good to look at (most of us know it as the pot marigold), but because it's a veritable pharmacy in its own right. The Latin name Calendula is derived from calends, the first day of the summer months in the Roman calendar. " Officinalis, " because this species of marigold was the official one in the dispensary of healing. And what a range of conditions this decorative garden flower can heal. Calendula is a potent treatment of choice for any illness affecting the liver or caused by liver malfunctioning, such as jaundice, hepatitis, and cirrhosis. Calendula is a digestive stimulant, useful for lack of appetite, malabsorption, or poor digestion (which often results in smelly feet). It also helps with gas and constipation. It is also a powerful healer of wounds in the digestive tract, such as ulcers, colitis and diverticulitis. Calendula is the best remedy for varicose veins, and may be used both internally and externally as an astringent. It helps to restore tone to the veins and eases circulation. A monograph on herbal medicinal substances presented in 1 987 by the West German Bundegesundheitsamt (Federal Health Authority) confirmed that calendula flowers have an inhibiting effect on inflammatory process in the mucosa of the mouth and throat and that calendula has a healing effect on cracks, bruises and burns. In fact, calendula promotes tissue granulation in fresh wounds as well as chronic, poorly healing wounds, leg ulcers and local dermal inflammations. A powerful blood cleanser, Calendula can be used with great success in cases of chronic eczema, boils, acne and teenage spots. " it also works on the lymphatic system to treat swollen lymph glands, tonsillitis and chronic sore throats. Its ability to strengthen a weak immune system also makes it useful for viral and fungal infections. During the First World War, Dr. Hoyle used Calendula to dress wounds in his front-line hospital. Dr. Dorothy Shephard also used the tincture during a World War later and found that it prevented infection in a way other antiseptics didn't. Calendula has a special affinity for the reproductive system. It can restore irregular periods and heal any wounds in the gynecological area caused by abortions, miscarriages, or surgery for ovarian cysts, polyps, pelvic inflammatory diseases and so on. It is also used as a healing agent after a traumatic delivery or caesarian section. A safe herb to take during pregnancy, Calendula can help with irritability, water retention, skin eruptions and thrush. On the emotional level, Calendula can comfort the heart and spirit. It is used for people who are nervous and easily frightened, who have poor defenses against stress, who pick up illnesses easily and feel needy of protection. Calendula is particularly good for shock and trauma. It helps people ground themselves and find strength in the face of crisis. This first-day-of-summer herb brings light and hope in times of darkness. Calendula Ointment For the skin, calendula is the remedy par excellence in speeding wound healing. Calendula ointment has been used for at least 800 years, exceeding versatile medicament used for treating burns, skin problems, venous congestion, varicose veins and decubitus ulcers (bedsores). It has been clearly demonstrated in all the above conditions that calendula ointment accelerates the healing of both large and small wounds, promoting granulation of tissues. Calendula ointment also stimulates the blood supply to the skin, making it more supple and more resistant to mechanical and chemical irritants. Small cracks in the skin, such as in the splits, chapping, and fissures that often occur on the lips, in the corners of the eyes, on fingers, or on the nipples, can often be painful. These heal quickly if they are massaged with calendula ointment. Use Calendula ointment for eczema, for burns and scalds to lessen scarring, and for athlete's foot or fungal infections. It is great for diaper rash and other skin problems in small children. Suggested use: Apply calendula ointment locally as needed. Ingredients: Calendula officinalis flowers, Vitamin E, in a base of bees wax. I have tried so many prescriptions and have seen a number of specialists - dermatologists, nothing worked for my constant itchy skin. In fact, I gave up trying, I just ignored the itch and then my wife brought home Calendula ointment. This ointment is like a miracle ointment - as soon as I applied it - my itching went away. So try it, it worked for me. James O., Wpg, MB Because of my medications, I have very dry skin on my hands that I have learned to live with because nothing else prescribed for me worked. When I first applied Calendula ointment; I could not believe it, but my hands healed. So I stopped using the Calendula ointment and my dry skin came back, now I apply the ointment once daily and have normal skin again.
