Fred Baughman, MD responds: It is not just psychiatry--and it has everything to do with money and nothing to do with healing--all of organized medicine have adopted the psychiatric scheme of making patients of normals: the AMA, AACAP, AAP, AAFP, AAN, CNS, ASAP. The Federal Government at every level goes along; CDC, FDA, DEA, the Congress, the Surgeon General. Big Pharma sprinkles the dollars they dance to. In 1970 Congressional hearings chaired by Cornelius Gallagher, D-NJ, regarding pharmacological therapy for school problems, Dr John D. Griffith, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, testified: " I would like to point out that every drug, however innocuous, has some degree of toxicity. A drug, therefore, is a type of poison and its poisonous qualities must be carefully weighed against its therapeutic usefulness. " The problem with psychopharmacology is that there is never a disease on the " risk " side of the risk vs. benefit equation, and that their is always an exogenous chemical--a poison--on the " benefit " or " treatment " side. Over time ill effects will always manifest themselves. There can never be a net positive outcome.
