Guest guest
Ok, help me with this.....how do you take that much C without having stomach upset? Forget the diarrhea, when I take more than about 5 grams, I get what feels like acid stomach. And that is from a buffered C product. Forget the diarrhea, when I take more than about 5 grams, I get what > feels like acid stomach. And that is from a buffered C product. > > Ken I take my vitamin C two ways each day. I eat four meals a day. The heaviest meal is breakfast. I slurp a large (2 quart) smoothie while reading my morning e-mail over a 2 hour period. I take about 1/2 my vitamin C dose with my breakfast smoothie -- half in tablet form & half as vitamin C crystals in the smoothie slowly over 2 hours. I take the rest of the vitamin C with the other 3 (smaller) meals. Vitamin C tablets on an empty stomach I can take 3 or 4 1,000 mg tablets, but no more. With a meal, I find no such problem. If one is taking smaller doses throughout the day (which is more ideal than what I do), one would probably not get upset stomach even when not with a meal. You say 5 grams is your limit. If you took 2 grams an hour over a 16 hour period, that would be 32 grams a day. Unless one was ill or very worn down, most people seem to get by on about a gram an hour (sometimes less). So no where near the 5 grams at a time which irritates your stomach. Alobar
Guest guest
Dear Ken, A number of factors are involved I think. Here are a few. Is the 5 grams taken all at once or in a somewaht short amount of time? Usually when people talk of taking 8 or 10 grams and up they are talking about in a 24 hour period. The body was designed to take in and utilize vitamins over time not all at once where the bulk of any vitamin will probably will not be utilized. A persons ability to take in and absorb vitamin C differs when one is healthy or when one is sick. Sometimes a sick person can take in huge quantities compared to someone who is well and has somewhat sufficient vitamin C in their system. When my children were young, although I didn't know much about nutrition and had only read the vitamin C and common cold book, they used to eat the 500mg orange flavored chewable C's like crazy when they had a cold. I didn't keep track as I knew that it was non toxic, but I would guess that they would eat 10 to 20 grams in a day, when their normal capacity probably would have been around 3 - 4 grams a day. I knew nothing about vitamin C or nutrition then. To bad that I wasn't aware enough to give them good nutrition and lots of C all of the time. In fact some people use vitamin C intake with high bowel tolerance to indicate a possible problem in the body. They reason that if a person can take huge amounts of C over a prolonged period that the person could have something wrong in the body to have such a high need to combat a possible major illness. They see it as an indicator to start looking. It is really the bodies ability to absorb that is in question here not the bodies ability to take such large amounts. What doesn't get absorbed is passed onto the gut and the sensers there recognize an acid substance, not exactly knowing if it is good or bad, and so acts to flush it out. In an IV this is no problem, and the body can take in very huge quantities. The dose involved is determinate on a number of facors. The bodies ability to absorb how much in what period of time and what need is present. Most animals, but not all, can produce their own Vitamin C in their own bodies from sugar molecules. So as their neeed increases because of illness they can respond by making more and eating more foods that are rich in C too. We are limited by not producing our own C but we now have the ability to make vitamin C in a lab or factory easily and have it at our disposal as we want. Severe illness rsponds well to large amounts such a heart disease or cancer and others. Some cancer patients take in up to 300,000 grams (yes, that is GRAMS we are talking here) of vitamin C IV with no problems. That is something that no animal can never match in manufacuring capacity. There are several good links on our links page that deal with vitamin C. PS. I forgot to mention buffering but you can research C in our links. Also if vitamin C goes past the mouth without stimulating digestive juices there and mixing with it, it is a harder job to absorb it (as with all foods and vitamins). So when taking a pill it bypasses this step completely. You probably know most of what I have written, but I thought it might help some other in the group. Vitamin C is quite different substance than most of the other vitamins. Guest guest
Dear Group, I forgot to mention some of the best about vitamin C. It our natural weapon against bacteria and viruses as well as many many other needs in our body. It will kill most bacteria and viruses. It is just a matter of getting enough into the body. A doctor by the name of Fred Klenner MD was curing polio with vitamin C in 1948, but it wasn't acceptable with the drug crowd at the AMA. I'm sorry to put so many messages on the board in such a short time but I just feel that it needs to be out there, if you know what I mean. Please don't let me going a little overboard deter anyone else from posting. In fact, I wish that some of these very, very knowledgeable vitamin people would post more. respectfuly, Frank Gettingwell, " califpacific " <califpacific> wrote: > Dear Ken, > > A number of factors are involved I think. Here are a few. > > Is the 5 grams taken all at once or in a somewaht short amount of > time? Guest guest
Dear Group, Upon rereading this message, I made a huge error when I wrote this. I was trying to show the safety and health benefits in taking vitamin C, so in using examples I wasn't thinking specifically about the large doses but trying to get a lot of small tidbits of information in many areas of C, to lead people to use the links and read a lot more about the uses of this vitamin. Well anyway I got carried away with enthuiasm. I meant to say that cancer patients use up to 300,000 units a day, thats 300 grams a day I.V., then I compounded it by stating again grams without think really about that size dose. After rereading it, I saw my error and felt bad. So, sorry for posting an error without rereading it before posting it. I had been reading about all of the lives having been lost, due to vitamins having been given a bad name for treatment and all of the damage done in the name of health done by so many medicines, that I just felt like posting a lot in trying to shake up a little corner of the world if nowhere else. It was also bothering me that Dorothy (member) has become so severly ill with cancer and I felt that she had never had the benefit of this information fully. Anyway, I hope that you guys really read these messages a litle more closely or at least don't be so polite and hold back any correction of my or anyone elses mistakes. It is very important that the members receive accurate information. If the information is accurate, then it will have credibility, and we all will benefit.
