The Contreras-Issels Therapy

 

While Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. was making breakthrough discoveries

in treating cancer patients in the early 1960's, Dr. Josef Issels

was experiencing similar success on the other side of the world in

Germany. One would have thought they were sharing notes by the way

their protocols paralleled one another. Each discovered that

destroying tumors could not truly cure a person of cancer. The cause

of the cancer had to be traced and dealt with in order to truly help

a person overcome the illness. Their work led them to a profound

evaluation of the total body function, including immune system,

organs and even spiritual strength. The result was an approach that

provided the patient with the resources they lacked to bring the

body back into balance; an approach that allowed the body to heal

itself. Both doctors also utilized anti-tumor agents to help the

patient's body eliminate the cancer.

In 1979, Dr. Josef Issels met Dr. Ernesto Contreras, Sr. and what

they had each discovered separately was confirmed by comparing

patient results. Today, Dr. Francisco Contreras has combined the

protocols of his father with those of Dr. Issels and continues to

develop the work started by both physicians. This comprehensive

treatment program is effective in many different types of cancer.

The following is a description of what is involved in the Contreras-

Issels Therapy.

 

Medical Evaluation

Before initiating any therapy at the Oasis of Hope, a qualified

physician will interview you to construct a medical history. You

will receive a full oncological exam, a series of blood tests, and

urinalysis will be conducted. The purpose of this evaluation is to

determine your condition, your systemic weakness and your

deficiencies. This information enables our physicians to develop a

treatment program that will provide your body with the resources it

may lack for proper immune function. Once determined, you will start

a treatment course that begins with detoxification and is then

followed by immune stimulation coupled with anti-tumor agents. A

nutrition program supports the whole process. We also have

counselors available 24 hrs. a day to support your emotional and

spiritual needs.

 

Detoxification

The environment we live in is polluted. All of the toxins found in

the air, land, water, food and medication (especially chemotherapy)

remain in our bodies, causing grave ravages. Some toxins can be

eliminated easily but the majority adhere to our tissues. Toxins

damage our metabolism in infinite ways, many of which are

carcinogenic. They slow our normal functions and consume scarce

circulating nutrients. Due to the overload of accumulated toxins

caused by the environment and poor diet, the organs in charge of

eliminating toxins are overtaxed and rendered incapable of the task.

This is why every therapy program at the Oasis of Hope begins with a

detoxification program.

The Oasis of Hope effectively utilizes intravenous solutions of

vitamin C, potassium, immunomodulators, polarizing and chelating

agents to pull toxins out of the tissue back into the blood stream.

The toxins must be eliminated efficiently during this time because

of the high content being released by the cells. Coffee enemas

stimulate liver function, which greatly helps the body detoxify

itself. A high colonic is effective in alleviating lower intestinal

blockages and supports proper bowel function.

Often, Oasis of Hope doctors will prescribe a juice fast for a

Immune Stimulation

A major focus of the Contreras-Issels Therapy is proper immune

function. The common denominator for a person who is ill is a

Enzymes

The possible antineoplastic effect of pancreatic enzymes was

suggested at the beginning of this century by Dr. John Beard, a well-

known embryologist. Studying the functions of placental tissue in

superior mammals and humans, he discovered that starting from the

first three months of pregnancy, the placental tissue or trophoblast

has all the functional and morphological characteristics of a

malignant tissue, high levels of proliferation, anaplasia and the

ability to send trophoblast to the body's general circulation,

including fetal circulation. In that way, fetuses incorporate in

their tissues those trophoblastic elements that have in their genes

the memory of a regression process to its malignant embryonic

character. From these studies the unitary or trophoblastic theory of

cancer was developed. But also, Dr. Beard discovered that when the

pancreas of the fetus starts functioning (after three months of

gestation), the trophoblastic tissue loses its malignancy

characteristics. According to that researcher, this is caused by the

presence of pancreatic enzymes in high quantities. But it wasn't

until 40 years later that Dr. Krebs started the use of amygdalin as

an anti-tumor agent and accepted the trophoblastic origin of cancer

as a valid thesis. Until then the idea accepted was that the

pancreatic enzymes influenced the tissue's tumorous behavior. From

the pancreatic enzyme complex, it was found that proteolytic enzymes

were the ones that caused the anti-tumor effect. By that time

proteolytic enzymes started to be used because of their anti-

inflammatory agents, especially in post-traumatic treatment. They

produced a lytic effect over the abnormal proteins generated in the

injured area.

 

Nutrition

One of best ways to provide resources to our bodies is through diet.

ingredient of the herb is a bioflavonoid mixture called silymarin,

the principal component of which is silybin.

Clinical research has demonstrated that Silymarin protects against

the liver toxicity of ethanol (alcohol) and can also be used with

good results in the treatment of viral and alcoholic hepatitis,

cirrhosis and chronic forms of hepatitis.

 

Carrot Root

Carrot root (Daucus carota) is a rich source of beta-carotene.

Provitamin A includes such precursor substances as beta-carotene

which coverts to vitamin A once inside the body. Beta-carotene has

received enormous attention during the last 10 years because of its

potential to boost immunity and its ability to thwart life-

threatening diseases such as heart disease and cancer. Beta-

carotene's immunity boosting effects have included: increased

antibody activity, faster rejection of skin grafts and accelerated

production of various disease-fighting cells.

It is believed that beta-carotene exerts a protective effect against

cancer through its immune-enhancing function and its unique

antioxidant properties. Beta-carotene is especially good at trapping

a highly toxic form of di-oxygen, called singlet oxygen, which

contributes to the malignancy process in tissues. Beta-carotene has

been called " the most efficient quencher of singlet oxygen

discovered thus far. " It has been calculated that one molecule of

beta-carotene can quench up to 1,000 molecules of singlet oxygen.

Beta-carotene in high doses can significantly reduce the immune-

depressive effects of radiation treatment and cancer chemotherapy.

The administration of beta-carotene has allowed increased dosages of

radiation and chemotherapy in laboratory animals which in most cases

has resulted in complete regression of tumors.

 

Garlic

Among garlic's attributes are its antibacterial, antifungal,

antiviral, antithrombotic, antihypertensive, lipid-lowering,

antiaging (antioxidant), antiarthritic and cancer-preventive

properties. Garlic's capacity to prevent cancer can be explained by

at least three mechanisms:

 

1) directly affecting the growth of cancer cells,

2) boosting immune cells to fight cancer, and

3) inhibiting chemicals that promote cancer.

 

Grape Seed Extract

An important nutrient in the quest for anti-aging and anti-disease

treatment is grape seed extract. Extensive research suggests that

grape seed extract may be beneficial in many areas of health

preservation due to its powerful antioxidant effect.

Recent research has shown that grape seed extract:

 

1) Is a potent free radical scavenger and inhibitor of free-radical

induced cellular damage, including lipid peroxidation and DNA

fragmentation.

2) Is bioavailable and a more powerful antioxidant than vitamin E, C

and beta-carotene, as well as the combination of vitamin E and C.

3) Is a powerful inhibitor of tobacco-induced oxidative damage and

cell death in human oral mucosal cells.

of normal cells.

5) Protects cells from the toxic effects of chemotherapy drugs.

6) Lowers blood pressure in hypertensive models.

7) Has the ability to bond with collagen; promoting youthful skin

and cell health and improving elasticity and flexibility in joints

and arteries.

8) Protects the body from sun damage and helps improve vision.

 

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a good source of chlorophyll and vitamins, especially

beta-carotene and vitamin E. Alfalfa powder contains the amino acid

L-canavanine, shown to have antibacterial and antitumoral activity.

This amino acid also inhibits the growth of some viruses, including

herpes simplex.

 

Boldo

Boldo helps facilitate digestion by stimulating the production of

gastric and bile juices, by decreasing intestine peristaltic

contractions and by prolonging intestinal transit. It is considered

liver and kidney functions.

 

Megadoses of Vitamins and Minerals

Anti-Tumor Agents

Though the body is capable of healing itself when its immune

Therapy provides a number of anti-tumor agents to aid you in your

Laetrile (Vitamin B-17/Amygdalin)

At the core of the Contreras-Issels Therapy is laetrile (also called

Vitamin B-17 and Amygdalin), a powerful and natural anti-tumor

agent. Laetrile is a natural chemotherapeutic agent found in over

1,200 plants, particularly in the seeds of common fruits such as

apricots, peaches, plums and apples. It is a diglucoside with a

cyanide radical that is highly " bio-accessible. " This means that it

penetrates through the cellular membrane, reaching high intra-

cellular concentrations easily. This cyanide radical is what

preoccupies most scientists, but it has been proven that laetrile is

completely non-toxic. Our own experience with thousands of patients

gives us complete confidence that there is no danger. The normal

cells in our body contain an enzyme called rhodenase

which " neutralizes " the laetrile. This enzyme prevents the laetrile

from releasing cyanide. Laetrile serves as glucose to healthy cells

that provides energy when metabolized.

Malignant cells do not contain the rhodenase enzyme. In the absence

of rhodenase, laetrile is activated and the cyanide radical is

released within malignant cells. The end result is tumor

destruction. The wonderful thing about laetrile is that it only

affects cancerous cells and normal cells are left unharmed.

As laetrile attacks unhealthy cells, it transforms into a salicilate

which is much like aspirin. It contributes greatly to pain control.

Laetrile is extremely effective in the prevention of a cancer

relapse. Because laetrile is natural and non-toxic, it can be taken

at a lower dosage for life as a preventative therapy.

 

Shark Cartilage

Shark cartilage inhibits the growth of blood vessels which feed

growing tumors, thereby restricting the vitality of the tumor. In

other words, it is an anti-angiogenesis agent. It is a non-toxic

product which increases the production of antibodies within the

immune system. It is recommended for cancer and other inflammatory

diseases.

In a clinical trial conducted by Dr. Contreras and Dr. Lane, it was

noted that tumors frequently experience significant reduction in

size within one to three months of the initial treatment. It was

also noted that it enhanced the efficacy of laetrile.

Universities and research centers around the world have done studies

to determine the therapeutic effects of shark cartilage. Cartilage

makes up about 6-8% of the shark's body weight. In fact, its entire

skeleton is cartilage, which contains mucopolysaccharides, proteins,

collagen and glycosaminoglycans, including chondroitin sulfate A, B,

and C. These various components of shark cartilage provide its

medicinal properties. Shark cartilage:

 

1. Accelerates wound healing. Glycosaminoglycans are responsible for

this effect.

2. Has a powerful anti-inflammatory activity, that comes from its

mucopolysaccharide components.

3. Stimulates the immune system.

4. Contains an anti-angiogenesis agent that inhibits the formation

of blood vessels.

 

Emulsified Vitamin A

Vitamin A is accepted as an agent of great use in important cancer

centers, most of all, on epidermoid carcinomas, chronical leukemia

and transitional cells. The first formal studies of the possible

anti-tumor effects of vitamin A were initiated in Germany, by

investigators of Mugos Laboratories of Munich. It was a proven fact

that lung cancer in Norwegian sailors was less common than in other

groups, even though they smoked since childhood. Logic suggested it

had to be the opposite. After studying the phenomenon, it was

discovered that the only reason was that they ate abundant

quantities of raw fish liver, rich in vitamin A , since childhood.

The logical deduction was that high doses of such vitamin prevented

the growth of lung cancer in long-term smokers.

It was also found that high doses of vitamin A were toxic, and could

produce adverse reactions. The problem was how to administer enough

dosage to observe preventive or healing effects without injuring the

liver. The solution was found by one of the investigators, when he

discovered that unprocessed milk had the vitamin, and children who

were breast-fed never experienced toxic effects. Mother Nature had

the solution by including vitamin A in milk in the form of micro-

emulsification. Mugos investigators proceeded to prepare a variety

of emulsified concentrations, until they found what they would call

high concentration A-Emulsion. One drop contains 15,000 units. They

were able to administer -in progressive doses- over a million units

per day, without producing hepatic toxicity.

The explanation was that, in emulsified form, vitamin A is absorbed

directly by the lymphatic system without going through the liver in

significant quantities. Having resolved the toxicity problem, it was

possible to test the product in high doses, and it was demonstrated

that vitamin A has the following effects:

 

1. In normal dosage, it works to protect the epithelia and vision.

2. In doses of 100,000 to 300,000 units per day, it works as a

potent immune-stimulant.

3. In doses of 500,000 to 1,000,000 units per day, it serves as a

potent anti-tumor agent, especially in epidermoid carcinomas and

transitionals. The anti-tumor dosage must be administered in a

progressive form, beginning with 5 drops two or three times a day,

until the patient's tolerance limit is reached.

 

Ozone Therapy

Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg discovered that malignant cells

could not survive when in contact with oxygen. Ozone is an oxygen

molecule made of three atoms (O3). It is an excellent anti-cancer
