Guest guest
Garlic Studies Flawed! JoAnn Guest Sep 30, 2002 15:21 PDT According to Dr. James Duke in his book Dr. Dukes " Essential Herbs " , " garlic contains at least five biologically active compounds that have been shown to help lower blood pressure, more than a dozen that lower cholesterol and about a dozen that help reduce the risk of stroke and blood clots. " Researchers feel that garlic lowers cholesterol by decreasing fat absorption. Unfortunately, this ancient herb was given bad press in 1998 by " The Journal of the American Medical Association " (JAMA). The article stated that " garlic did not lower cholesterol. " Information from the article, which was repeated in major newspapers and on television, served to confuse the public even further about what garlic could or could not do for their heart. But after closer examination of the article, it was discovered that the study used a garlic product called " Tegra " , which is a pill that contains concentrated garlic oil. According to Dr. Dukes, " The fault of the research was that Tegra doesn't contain the major cholesterol-lowering compounds of garlic. It's prepared from the steam-distilled oil of garlic in which the allicin is converted into various oil-soluble compounds…it was not a study of garlic…it was a study of Tegra. " Defining the Perfect Dose As Dr. Dukes sums it up, " A clove of garlic a day keeps the hypocholesterolemic hucksters away. " Well said!!
