Guest guest
Hello, I have a friend who has just been diagnosed with AIDS. His T-cell count is still good as the disease is in it's early stages. He is going to start the traditional drug protocol immediately but also wanted me to research alternative therapies for him. I am researching the internet but thought this would be a good place to start. If anyone has any good websites, books, advice etc.. that would save us precious time I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance. Rena

Guest guest
Hi there! Your friend would benefit from taking time to adjust to diagnosis, and delay considering treatment (antiretrovirals) just for a while. Good CD4's, good general health, not much reason to begin treatment. There's plenty of alternatives to consider, and most AIDS organizations have information on these options available. It's best if he/she does their own Search for information, as this is an empowering move that actually assists wellbeing. Knowledge is power, power given away to a physician is power lost. The consensus was: " hit hard, hit early " , now realized to have been dangerously wrong. None of the drugs are without side effects, all are distressing! These days, people are diagnosed early in the progression, permitting time for necessary & practical planning, as other affairs are concerned. Besides considering alternative medicine to slow progression & keep healthy as long as possible, consderations of early retirement, loss of income, insurance, can be helpful in assuring the best quality of life possible. It's complicated, but early planning is just plain smart! We focus alot on virus, but there's indications that a bacteria: mycoplasma is a cofactor. Some herbal medicines can address both issues, and if chosing this approach, be sure that the DOSE is correct. A good medicine taken inadequately can't do its job. My reccommendation is that your friend join a local AIDS organization, and a PWA support group, become very well informed & choose accordingly. Keep in mind, too, choosing pharmaceuticals doesn't mean natural medicines can't be used as well. Lots of options! It can take a few months to adjust, but your friend will likely just get on with life, and take even better care of him/herself. Good luck to your friend, listen while they complete the process of adjustment, and push for personal empowerment.
