Guest guest
There is an Epidemic of Diabetes Raging in America JoAnn Guest Aug 07, 2002 10:02 PDT There is a literal epidemic of diabetes raging across America and attacking multiplied millions around the world. Recently Newsweek magazine did a major article on diabetes. The Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia has released a warning, along with some staggering figures. Some 16 million people in America have diabetes—on third of them don't even know they have it. There are 2,000 new cases of diabetes diagnosed every day! In the past eight years, diabetes has increased 30 percent. Among 30 year olds diabetes has increased an astounding 70 percent! This disease used to occur in people in their 50s and 60s. Now even teenagers are developing glucose intolerance, the precursor (or forerunner) to diabetes. Ironically, diabetes is a disease of " starvation in a land of plenty " . The food we eat breaks down into glucose that goes into the blood stream. Then the pancreas secretes insulin, which transports the sugar into body cells, and the blood sugar level decreases. If too many sugary, starching junk foods are consumed, the blood stream is suddenly overloaded with glucose, and insulin levels soar. Body cells then develop insulin resistance, which doesn't allow the sugar to pass from the blood stream through the cell walls. So the cells are " starving " for energy, while the blood is " plentiful " in sugar. The high sugar level begins interacting with proteins, attacking blood vessels and nerves. In high levels, insulin itself turns into a poison that attacks blood vessel walls and arteries and increases the risk of strokes and heart attacks. Working overtime to create more and more insulin, the pancreas can even burn itself out and shut down. Facing a huge load of glucose in the blood stream, the body calls for water to dilute it and expel it through the kidneys. So a person gets thirsty and drinks more, then goes to the bathroom frequently to flush out the waste. At the same time, undernourished cells tell the body to eat more food because they are starving, but the person feels weaker and weaker. Feeling hunger pangs, the diabetic eats again, which worsens his overweight condition. And if he chooses more sugary foods to try to stimulate his energy level, the vicious cycle starts all over. What eventually happens to the body of the diabetic? Body cells develop insulin resistance and don't respond to insulin, so they starve and get so weak and tired they can hardly function. Kidneys break down from overuse and damage—half the people who require dialysis are diabetics. With the sugar-insulin attack on nerves and blood vessels, diabetes is the worlds leading cause of blindness. Perhaps the most feared complication is neuropathy—tingling and numbness of the lower extremities and loss of circulation that can lead to amputation of toes, a foot, a leg. But the grim truth is that 75 percent of diabetics eventually die from heart attacks. Do I have your attention yet? Believe me, I'm no trying to exaggerate of overemphasize the threat of this dreaded disease that is literally reaching epidemic proportions in our country today. And still the biggest challenge doctors face in dealing with this problem is complacency. People say, " Well, it won't happen to me. " Or they choose to ignore the symptoms like increased thirst, using the bathroom more often, blurred vision, or milk numbness in a foot. Start right now taking care of your " temple " , the body where you live. There are vital, effective things you can do. Change your diet. Exercise. Take the important natural supplements. Do not ignore this major health threat. Start now to get yourself informed about how it can effect you and your loved ones. What you don't know CAN hurt you.
