Chromium May Reduce Risk of Diabetes

June 27, 1997

NEW YORK (BW HealthWire)

A new study presented at the 57th Annual Scientific Session of the

American Diabetes Association Meeting in Boston, on June 23, 1997,

demonstrated that daily supplementation with 1,000 micrograms of

chromium supplied as chromium picolinate significantly enhanced the

action of insulin.

The subjects were moderately obese people with a high risk of

developing type II (adult-onset) diabetes.

Insulin is the master metabolic hormone in our body and regulates

blood sugar; chromium is an essential trace mineral required by

humans in order for insulin to work properly. In persons with the

most common form of diabetes the effects of insulin on lowering blood

sugar are reduced. This decrease in effect is referred to as insulin

resistance, and is now believed to be the primary defect in type II

diabetes. Years before any signs or symptoms of diabetes are seen in

these at-risk individuals (such as those with a family history of

diabetes), insulin resistance has already taken a toll on their blood

sugar control.

This study was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled

clinical trial directed by William Cefalu, M.D., director of the

Diabetes Comprehensive Care and Research Program at the Bowman Gray

School of Medicine, Wake Forest University. It involved 29 overweight

individuals who also had a family history of diabetes. They received

either a placebo or 1,000 micrograms (1 mg) of chromium daily. After

four months, insulin resistance was reduced by a statistically

significant 40%, and this improvement was maintained at the end of

eight months.

Also examined in these subjects (using a sophisticated imaging

technique) was the amount of abdominal fat present at the beginning

and end of the study. The placebo group gained 6.5% abdominal fat

while the chromium group gained just 1%. This difference was not

statistically significant, possibly due to the small number of

persons in the trial. " Even though only a small number of subjects

were studied, the improvement in insulin sensitivity in

chromium-supplemented subjects was quite significant and impressive, "

noted Dr. Cefalu. " This is a potentially important finding in light

of the fact that insulin resistance often precedes type II diabetes.

Chromium picolinate is a nutritional supplement that can reduce risk

factors for the development of diabetes. "

Richard Anderson, Ph.D., senior scientist at the United States

Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Laboratory in Beltsville,

Md., and a leading authority on dietary chromium added: " Dr. Cefalu's

findings are exciting and could prove to be of great importance if

replicated in future studies. They are certainly consistent with our

findings which were reported at last year's ADA meeting: We found

improved blood sugar control in a group of Chinese patients with type

II diabetes who were supplemented with chromium. " The Chromium

Information Bureau is an industry-supported, non-profit organization

dedicated to the dissemination of scientific and clinical information

on the essential trace mineral chromium.

---Alobar,

The doses seem to be unusually high in those studies. Regarding

chromium, I believe that GTF Chromium is the very best one.

Picolinate is good, but there are other factors in the GTF Chromium

that work synergistically, making it more effective!

I believe that chromium can be a great aid, however Vanadium

(vanadyl sulfate) has proven to be just as effective if not more so!

Why overdose on one supplement when there are others that work just

as well? I am of the opinion that it takes a combination of the

trace minerals to do the job well.

---Just another tip...at the Alacer website I noticed that they're

offering a supplement called Triple Chrome that has all three of the

chromiums plus some Manganese!! Sounds good to me.

I have very limited money to spend & I must be frugal. GNC

sells chromium picolinate at a much cheaper price than the Triple

chrome you mention. If I actually knew the triple chrome to be

better for me, I might spring for it, but until I manage to

assimilate more info, I guess I'll stick with the picolinate.

I was just reporting a study I discovered on the web. I have

no clue as to whether the doses are unusually high. What do you

know of possible problems from that dosage? Got a web link showing

the benefits of Vanadium supplementation?

Hmm, I always buy chromium polynicotate (did I spell that right).

Years ago I read a good article in a news paper about chromium

picolinate & & polynicotate & that convinced me enough back then.

But then I admit to reading extreme papers on anything & everything.

I admit I simply am not knowledgeable about this third chromium

mentioned.

---Vache,

I am concerned about high doses of chromium. Chromium is

included in many of the weight loss supplements at GNC and other

hfs's. Apparently they are doing studies at the moment to determine

whether this is a *safe* supplement. I think it is safe when doing

the recommended amounts, although, I've never heard of anyone taking

more than 600 mgs a day and that's in doses of 200 mgs each. Dr.

Whitaker recommends vanadyl sulfate very highly. He should know he's

an MD turned alternative.:-)

Also, my friend Robin had severe problems with her pancreas and

glucose levels and on taking vanadium they literally all

disappeared. She swears by it.

Seems to be sorta pricey on this site, but it might be worth it over

time,...

seems to have great health benefits.

---Alobar, Personally I'm not aware of any problems with 1,000 mcgs

of chromium on a daily basis. In fact, Shari Lieberman Ph.D in her

book, " The complete vitamin and mineral book " , although she

recommends 600 mcgs daily,

states that there is NO known toxicity for chromium.

In fact,I would wonder why they are investigating this supplement

at all. I would think they might focus their energies on Ephedra or

Guarana which are exceeedingly more harmful and

KNOWN to have low levels of toxicity, contributing to strokes,

heart attacks and various other things.

Chromium is the best supplement for diabetes, however Shari says

that managanese is also extremely important in maintaining healthy

glucose levels!

If I had diabetes, I believe I would drink green tea (the

polyphenols are known to lower elevated glucose levels), and take

fenugreek, chromium, manganese and L-Carnitine.

The minerals in the GTF chromium supplements include niacin,

cysteine, glycine and glutamic acid.

Just wondering if you were aware of the importance of Natural

Vitamin E in treating Diabetics. We have family memebers with severe

diabetes that have improved taking high dosages of E.

Doses of Vitamin E twice daily in increments of 400 IUs each

are beneficial. I am including a good site for a high-quality cost-

effective vitamin E here:

http://www.nutritionexpress.com

Their brand goes by the name of Lindbergh. These vitamins although

deeply discounted are high-quality supplements.

L & H Vitamins has *NOW* chromium available by mail order. They have

a website, but I do believe their catalog price is discounted quite

a bit more if I remember correctly.

You can get the catalog by calling 1-800-221-1152.

Shari also says that one must experment with the various forms of

chromium to see which one works the best for them. " If you don't

achieve the desired results with one form of chromium, you should

try another form! "

God Bless

and Good luck,
