ASPARTAME UPDATES

Aspartame is everywhere! Please remember to check ALL labels. The PKU listserve

is trying to keep everyone up to date. The following items have been spotted to

include aspartame.

 

Wet and Wild Lip Gloss (Pavion, Ltd., in Nyack, NY), vanilla flavor. It does

contain 0.3 - 0.4% aspartame, or 27 - 36 mg of aspartame per 3.2-oz (9 g)

container. Half of this, i.e. 13 - 18 mg, is phenylalanine. Used sparingly or

infrequently, it is an insignificant amount of phe. (Beth, PKU, age 12).

 

Package of powdered punch (institutional brand). To my surprise the drink

contained both sugar and aspartame. This was an institutional brand so it is

probably not something you would buy off the shelf and a grocery store. (Angie)

 

Pepsi One contains Aspartame in it so watch out for that. (The Walter's)

 

Bubbletape bubblegum (Amurol Confections Co., Yorkville, IL 60560) now contains

nutrasweet. (Susan, Colorado)

 

Alka seltzer plus Children's Cold Medicine-Effervescent tablets each tablet =

4.48 mg PHE according to back of the package

 

Zofran (ondansetron HCl) ODT (orally disintegrating tablets) Each tablet=

<0.03mg PHE according to package insert

 

Antibiotics

Augmentin by Smith-Kline-Beachem revised 3/99

200mg chew tablets 2.1mg per tablet

400mg chew tablets 4.2mg per tablet

200mg/5ml susp 7mg per teaspoon

400mg/5ml susp 7mg per teaspoon

All other Augmentin products do not contain Phe.

Also, according to their customer service, the 250mg/5ml strength Augmentin

never had aspartame as its sweetener.

 

Amoxil by Smith-Kline-Beachem revised 7/99

200mg chew tab 1.82mg per tablet

400mg chew tab 3.64mg per tablet

Amoxil suspension does not contain phe.

Some companies will be adding Aspartame to breakfast cereals to enhance

sweetness without adding extra calories. Because these cereals will also have

sugar, they will not be labeled sugar free. Be on the lookout the next time you

Splenda brand sweetener and tastes great.
