Could you tell us what form you use, and how much you take during the day? Is it divided up in two or three amounts? ect. I have two kinds of powder and a number of other mixed supplements that provide 1 gram each. I would like to increase my vitamin C intake to 10 or 12 grams for a time. Bigger than 1000 mg & they are hard for me to swallow & small than 1000 mg & I have to take too many tablets. I have really bad teeth & am concerned about too much acidity on my mouth dissolving my teeth if I took this much ascorbic acid dissolved in water. When I feel ok, I take 6-8 tablets twice a day -- about an hour or two after I wake up with my breakfast smoothie & about 6 hours before bed with a small glass of milk & an apple. Taking the C with my smoothie (fruit, nuts, flax seed, protein powder, fiber, coconut oil) or with a glass of milk prevents any stomach upset which sometimes arises with large vitamin C doses. If I feel a flu or cold coming on, I add one or two additional doses of 4-6 tablets, one 6 tablet dose at bedtime, and maybe another smaller dose of 2-4 tablets with my main meal 1/2 way between the 2 doses mentioned above. When taking vitamin C at bedtime I occasionally have gurgles down below & have to break my sleep for a bathroom run, but that is a small price to pay for being able to stop most colds dead in their tracks. Sometimes (like last New Year's eve) I have to work outside in near freezing temperatures & drizzling rain, I actually get sick enough that I stay in bed for a day. Then I up my dose to every 2 hours & consume vitamin C to bowel tolerance. I start with 8 grams every 2 hours & back off when bowel tolerance is reached. I do not do this unless I am home & have my bathroom handy. Working outside (2 blocks walk plus 3 flights of stairs from my bathroom) in winter when I wear many layers of clothes is not conducive to taking vitamin C to bowel tolerance. I can usually knock out a bad cold in 24-36 hours & get back to work with only one day missed from work. This happens about once a year. Before taking lots of vitamin C, I used to get sick many times each winter & every time there was a rapid temperature fluctuation in Spring & Fall. All my life people have told me that colds are caused by virus & not by getting chilled, but my experience indicates that getting chilled will stress out my body sufficiently that I am likely to get sick from whatever bugs are around that I am usually able to shake off when not stressed by getting cold or wet. With high vitamin C intake, I can handle far more environmental stress before I get ill & adding more C short-circuits out the flu if I start getting sick. It used to take me over a week to get functional after coming down with a flu. Now it takes 24-36 hours. My friend Cliff (a nurse) came down with kidney stones several years ago & the doctors warned him that he would likely have more kidney stones if he did not cut back on his vitamin C. Cliff used to take about 1/3 to 1/2 as much vitamin C as I did ( & I have probably doubled my dose since then). While I am not an expert, I feel that the reason why Cliff got kidney stones & I have not has far more to do with me drinking 3-4 quarts of water a day & Cliff drinking diet coke as his sole water source. I used to drink coke (not diet coke) too (nearly a liter a day) but I also drank plenty of water. As I say, I am no expert, but I believe Cliff's lack of water was far more to blame for his kidney stones than anything else. Alobar
