Ginger and Arthritis

Ginger and Arthritis?

WeÌve already issued red flags on some of the newer arthritis drugs. Medical

concerns have been voiced in the medical literature about the potential of some

of these products such as Celebrex Vioxx and their second generation cousins to

cause blood clot-related heart attacks and strokes.

Getting much less all-round media attention than these aggressively marketed

products is a preliminary study showing that ginger may offer arthritis

sufferers some pain relief.

The study headed by Ray Altman, a rheumatologist at the University of Miami

School of Medicine, and published in the November edition of Arthritis and

Rheumatism, shows a dietary supplement made of extracts from this well-known

root spice appears to be as effective as conventional painkillers in treating

osteoarthritis, a common joint disease.

Ginger is known to have anti-inflammatory properties and has a long history as a

medicinal plant. It is prominent in traditional Chinese and Indian medicine.

Still, the new study is small and short-term. Further research will be necessary

to get a better handle on the type of patient who might benefit from ginger.

Side-effects associated with use of ginger and the rootÌs possible interactions

with other drugs also will need more careful study.
