The amount of fructose that we ingest from eating a whole fruit (that has not been juiced or dried to concentrate the sugar) does not have any adverse effects on the body. The food industry now uses high fructose corn syrup as a sweetener in a vast multitude of products. This has most consumers taking in high quantities of fructose daily, which can cause problems. For years scientists have known, and published, the fact that when rodents are fed fructose they become resistant to insulin. When this occurs the cells cannot accept sugar from the blood and the blood sugar is elevated. Insulin resistance is the main cause of developing diabetes in the adult years of life. The incidence of adult onset diabetes and insulin resistance is increasing in this country. One of the hallmarks of insulin resistance (now termed Syndrome X) is weight gain in the trunk of the body (large abdomen). Recently it has been shown that not only does fructose lead to insulin resistance (and hypertension) in animals, but also in humans, This current study on humans (Am J Physiol Endoctinol Metab 2000 Oct;279 (4):E907-E91 1) looked at healthy volunteers. When these people were given fructose they ended up needing 2.3 times as much insulin to maintain " normal " blood sugar levels! Because of this it is best to avoid all products made with high fructose corn syrup. One should also avoid drinking large amounts of fruit juice (unless diluted 50% with water) or large quantities of dried fruits. It is all right to eat fruits in their whole form, just don't juice them. If one already has insulin resistance the best method to begin reversing this problem is to develop more muscle. This means that one must begin to exercise regularly. It is best that this occur under the direction of a professional trainer. ___ Disclaimer!
