Lessons for Afghanistan

Tens of thousands of members of the Armed Services who served in the 1990-91

Gulf War say they suffer from illnesses, including chronic muscle and joint

pain, anxiety, and memory loss.

Now a specific illness - Lou Gehrig's disease - has been added to the list.

Nearly twice as many Gulf War veterans are likely to develop this progressive

neurological illness as other military service personnel, a government report

reveals.

According to an Associated Press report, military officials are now being much

more vigilant in their medical record-keeping for troops abroad and more

selective about which men and women are sent overseas.

But the National Gulf War Resource Center says there is still inadequate

medical screening before, during and after troop deployment.
