While treatments can temporarily reduce swelling and pain, the symptoms usually return. BUT, recent nutritional advances are now bringing lasting relief to the victims of this widespread and debilitating joint disease. Presently, “arthritis” refers to more than 190 rheumatic diseases in which one or more joints become inflamed. The swelling, stiffness and pain associated with arthritis is most common in the hands, hips or knees, but it can strike in any of the body’s 200 joints. “Joint disorders are the number one medical problem in the world,” says Dr. Luke Bucci, a researcher and clinical nutritionist describing not only arthritis but diseases which include aches and pains in connective tissues relating to the joints. These tissues include ligaments, tendons, muscles and bursae. Prolonged inflammation can eventually lead to severe damage to the joint itself. In the human body, joints are cushioned by cartilage. In cases of arthritis, cartilage membranes become inflamed, warm and puffy. Until recently, little was known about regenerating cartilage. But now, says Bucci, nutrition can fight arthritis. “Supplementation, not drugs, are what repairs cartilege,” he says. In his book, “Pain free”, Bucci examines the effects of nutrients like glucosamine on arthritis. Produced by the body, glucosamine feeds the joints. “It’s really the mother of all connective tissues,” explains Bucci, who believes that giving the body an extra portion seems to send the joints a message. “It tells your cartilege, ‘You have plenty of glucosamine---go ahead and repair’.” While most think arthritis afflicts only the elderly, it can strike persons of any age. Molly Hauck, 7, was afflicted with a severe form of arthritis that left her nearly bedridden with pain and swelling. She was unable to run and play with other children her age. After three years of suffering, Molly’s bleak outlook changed after taking a supplement combining chondroitin and glucosamine and other nutrients. “The twinkle’s back in her eye,” says her mom, “and her appetite has increased again.” Today, her mother says Molly is able to go outside and play. She doesn’t sit out there and just say, “I can’t.” Retired Major League infielder Greg Pryor, a member of the ’85 World Series champion Kansas City Royals, was suffering joint pain in his hand until he tried a glucosamine supplement. “Over a three-to-four week period,” he said, “I knew it was working.” Once the pain left his hand, Pryor simply reduced his dosage and resumed his normal activities—pain free. Others are finding similar results. Some senior citizens report being able to resume playing golf after their severely arthritic knew responded to the chondroitin and glucosamine supplements. Pharmacist Bob Henderson heads Nutramax Labs, which produces Cosamin, a unique combination of glucosamine and chondroitin—another nutrient sometimes recommended in one capsule. Henderson believes natural products and nutraceuticals like Cosamin, “can help the body to repair itself without going through some of the more dangerous chemicals.” Cosequin is a similar product used to treat animals suffering with degenerative joint disorders. Henderson finds much more openness among the veterinarians using Cosequin than among physicians using the human equivalent for their patients. His son a veterinarian, explains, “A lot of animal owners do not want to use drug-type therapy.” Preferring instead “more natural” ways of getting to the root of the problem. Bucci adds that veterinarians are more apt to try progressive treatments, while physicians must cater to patients’ demands for pain relief. “People want to feel better right away,” he explains. We’ve developed tremendous amounts of analgesics….which are very successful at killing the pain but don't help your body repair.” Since his successful recovery, Pryor has started his own health and nutrition business with his wife, Michelle.Together, they have been educating people about glucosamine—especially within the baseball community, where several members of the Royals pitching staff now regularly take glucosamine supplements. “Glucosamine is just a portion of what athletes need as far as nutrients,” says Pryor. “There are a lot of nutrients that your body would like to have to keep strong, healthy joints.” Though uncertain how many arthritis sufferers could benefit from nutritional supplements. Bucci is nevertheless convinced, “It’s the vast majority.” So whether for an athlete, a senior citizen or a young child like Molly, supplements could further enhance the chances of a healthy future. --Based on a CBN News report by Gailon Tetheroth “ For wisdom is protection…but the advantage of knowledge is that wisdom preserves the lives of its possessors.” (Ecclesiastes 7:12) For more information on Cosamin contact Nutramax Laboratories (800/925-5187) JoAnn Guest joguest Friendsforhealthnaturally http://canceranswer.homestead.com/AIM.html theaimcompanies " Health is not a Medical Issue " Voting Site: Receding Waters 1- http://www.thesitefights.com/team28/Receding_Waters/receding1.html ---------- ------ End of Forwarded Message ------
Guest guest
JoAnn There's something odd here. Just a day or two ago, I read an e-mail from a supplements company. The writer was de-bunking what he considered myths in the nutritional world. He said that Glucosamine was a hoax, perpetrated by the people that manufacture and sell it. He said that the Glucosamine molecule was too large for the intestine to absorb. I've used Glucosamine, but without knowing if it helped with my problem knee. I'll try to find the advertisement I saw, and identify the company that posted it. Guest guest
JoAnn, Thanks for the post on Glucosamine/Choindroitin from the Nutramax labs. It was very interesting. I used to take their brand, Cosamin, DS but now take the Schiff brand. The cost is much less. Consumers report + consumers lab rated Schiff as okay. Hugs, Jean
Guest guest
--- John, Good Evening, Just curious...which supplement was HE promoting? LOL Many times NSAIDS will counteract any benefits one might receive from glucosamine supplementation. Even the medical profession admits to this privately. I've just heard too many testimonies of its effectiveness to believe otherwise, although I do believe that diet and lifestyle play a big part in recovery. Foods high in sulphur play a big role in healing, also boron and vitamin D are a factor. There are studies that prove the effectiveness of glucosamine. They just seem to be overlooked. Guest guest
--- You're very welcome, Jean. I am of the opinion that Schiff is rated among the better supplements. I also use their magnesium. Good luck with it all. There are topical ointments one can use also. tea tree oil is similar to Ben-Gey, yet without all the harmful salicylates. Very good for both arthritis and sports injuries. We have found various natural Eucalytus ointments to be quite effective for pain management. Guest guest
Dear John, That molecule probably can not be absorbed intact. That does not mean that it is not having an affect. The body uses glutamine to form ammonium ion in the kidney, and this in turn tends to retard potassium excretion. So by relieving the low cell potassium during arthritis, it may be beneficial. Of course I believe the way to handle potassium is not lose it in the first place. Sincerely, Charles Weber
