Guest guest
Liz, This can be a touchy subject and I'm sure there will be a litany of replys to your post. Firstly and most important if you are looking to supplement your diet in order to fortify your health you need to do two things a) make sure your diet is on target as there is no supplement that will offset a poor diet and b) take only supplements that are made from food. Do not use supplements that are synthetically made. Unfortunately I just eliminated nearly everything in your local healthfood store. The reason your supplements should not be synthetic is that when taken in their fractionated synthetic forms can actually cause more nutritional imbalance than there was before you started taking them. Whereas when a supplement is concentrated from food directly it is more easily assimilated and utilized and no imbalances are caused. Realize that a drug by some peoples definition is a synthetic concentrated chemical used to stimulate a specific bodily event. Well synthetic supplements are just that synthetic concentrated chemicals. So the obvious next question is where do you get food based supplements. Well there are basically three companies that are doing this best number one and in a class of its own is Standard Process, they have been making nutritional food derived supplements for over 70 years and they farm their own land to produce the food used for the supplements. To give you an idea how over the top they are. All food mineral content and therefore food supplement content comes from the soil, the average topsoil in north america measures 5-8 inches, the average topsoil at the SP farms measure 8 to 10 FEET. There is no more well cared for farmland anywhere in the world and no company has their track record. SP is the only supplement line I recommend in my office and it is the only supplement line my family uses. I know it sounds like I am some kind of " company man " on this but I assure you I receive absolutely nothing from them whatsoever. They really are just in a class by themselves. The other two companies that produce food based supplements that are worth your while as I said are still not even in the same league as SP, however they are Doctors Research and Garden of Life. Neither has their own farms or the track record to inspire my confidence, however in a pinch they do a good job. SP is only available at a health care providers office, as they do not have any retail distributors, this helps keep some costs down and no money wasted on marketing and flashy packaging. You don't need to be a patient of the health care provider you just need to know where they are and go to the office and pick up your supps instead of the store. If for some reason you cannot locate someone in your area or you want help doing that let me know and I'll give you a hand, and in a worst case senario if you are in a remote area or something I can send you some of mine. Just let me know. I cannot seem to locate information on the ingredients in this product. The " research " section does not link to any research papers. There are quality control tests done by a lab, but no research done by scientists in the same field that I could find. I see lots of testemonials, but I am looking for research. I am not saying the stuff is not good, but from the site, it looks like a MLM marketing brochure with not much to back up the claims other than testimonials. The fact that they talk about their product with implied connections to things I would not want to put into my body -- i.e., " 1928 Penicillin 1953 Polio Vaccine 1999 Transfer Factors " -- makes me real nervous about it. Either there is a connection (which makes me want to stay away from it) or it is just marketing hype to say their product is just as revolutionary as penicillin & polio vaccine. If the stuff is that revolutionary, I'd like to see links to technical papers published in reputable scientific journals. Alobar

Let us say there are many differences of opinions about vitamins. I buy good quality synthetic vitamins & have been using them for over 20 years now & I am satisfied. By all means, eat a good diet. But you will probably be learning what a good diet should be for the rest of your life & changing your diet as you go along. I take mega vitamin C. When starting mega C, I'd suggest taking C to bowel tolerance to figure out your maximum dose, then cut back a bit to avoid having to find a bathroom in a hurry while living life. I take a good quality multi-vitamin & mineral tablet (I like GNC brand ultramega). I take lysine & proline as per Rath/Pauling suggestion. I take co-enzyme Q10 -- dose depends on what I can afford. 60 mg a day at max, but sometimes only 15 mg a day if I am poor. I take a whole bunch of other things as well, but that is a start. Read, read, and read more. Adjust your opinions based upon a) what you read b) what you believe after thinking about what you read c) what you feel is doing you good or harm after you begin taking a supplement. There are no pat answers. If I find a group of people who are all over 130 yrs old who have been monitoring their diet & supplement intake for the past 50-75 years, I will be very interested in what they have to say. Until then, the best we can do is share what we think we know & speak out when someone says something we feel does not make sense. Some of the alchemists of the ancient world were said to have been looking to turn lead into gold, but I suspect many of them were looking to prolong youth & possibly live longer & healthier. They just veiled their words in arcane language. Today, there are many researchers who are just as hard to understand as the ancient alchemists. And some are indeed looking for gold -- by writing lies to sell to the people who fund them, or by selling expensive products to people who desperately want to believe. And some people have something very worthwhile to say. It is only by reading tons of things on many health related lists & websites that one can hope to begin to cut through the muddle & begin to understand what one might best be eating & what kinds of supplements one might best be taking. I spend about 10-15 hours a week reading about health & diet related matters. Is it worth the effort? For me, the answer is a resounding *YES*. It is my life & well-being at stake here. And becoming a world-class expert on my health & well-being is the only course of action I believe has any chance of helping me life a high quality live over the next 50 (hopefully more!) years. In the beginning, it is sooooo hard to say who is onto something, who is a liar, and who is self deluded. Almost everyone (IMO) has big blind spots. I trust nobody 100%. But over time, it becomes a bit easier to pick out the ones which just do not ring true. But I suspect that many of us on various health related lists would strongly disagree which websites or researchers are best ignored. All we each can do is read, read, and read some more -- then compare notes at every possible opportunity. Best luck to all of us seeking a better life.
