Dear Friends,

 

I am asking for your help. Iowa has a " gag order " on the

discussion of mercury in dentistry. It is Iowa Administrative Rule

650 27.7(8):

 

" Recommending removal of restorations or removing said

restorations from the nonallergic patient for the alleged purpose

of removing toxic substances from the body, when such activity is

initiated by the dentist, is an improper and unacceptable

treatment regimen.

 

Shortly after taking office, Governor Thomas J. Vilsack issued an

executive order to review all of Iowa's Administrative Rules. As

part of the review process, I asked the Iowa Board of Dental

Examiners to rescind the above rule. The board denied my

petition, but the governor still has to give final approval. Now I

have asked the governor to reject the rule. It might be a " long

shot " , but the governor could put pressure on the board to

rescind the rule and could maybe reject the rule himself. No

matter what the outcome, the governor is being educated and

that will put us in a better position for future activities.

 

I am asking that you write the governor and ask him to do

whatever he can to rescind the rule. Remember that he did not

write the rule and maybe doesn't even like it. He is a governor

who is particularly sensitive to the rights of victims.

 

I am especially asking those of you with expertise or experience

with the legal, medical, political or environmental aspects of the

issue to write him. He needs to know that the issue is of

nationwide interest and that there is a sound basis for

rescinding the rule.
