I seem to recall that Scarlet fever is a serious disease.

When I was in the 7/8 Grade, all in one room; once or twice a year we boys

would pick up some soft small grey rocks

on the playground at afternoon recess. Then about a half hour later we

would start rubbing them together; but quietly. This produced an odor

similar to gas fumes. When it got strong some would start coughing.

Eventually the Teacher would smell the odor and ask some students if they

smelled anything strange. Then we were marched out of the room while the

janitor came to inspect. It was good for an hour out of class sometimes.

They never found the gas leak while I was there.
