ACTION ALERTS -- USA & Canada

Mon, 28 Jan 2002 05:01:01 PST

News Update From The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods

----

Dear Health Freedom Fighters,

The Campaign to Label Genetically Engineered Foods has implemented

ACTION ALERTS for activities taking place in both the United States and

Canada.

UNITED STATES

The Senate version of the Farm Bill, formally called S. 1731, the

Agriculture, Conservation and Rural Enhancement Act, contains a

provision in Section 333 that makes available $16 million for each of

fiscal years 2002 to 2004 to promote genetically engineered foods in

foreign countries.

The Campaign opposes U.S. taxpayer money being spent to promote

genetically engineered foods.

Senator Barbara Boxer has agreed to make a motion to remove Section 333

from S. 1731 if we can get other Senators to oppose this government

handout to the agricultural biotech industry.

The ACTION ALERT recommends that you to send both e-mail and form

letters to the two Senators from your state.

To send e-mails, print out form letters, and read Section 333, go to the

following web page:

CANADA

Through this Thursday, January 31st, Canadian citizens can send comments

over the Internet to the Canadian Biotechnology Advisory Committee

(CBAC).

The CBAC released an " Interim Report on Improving the Regulation of

Genetically Modified Foods and other Novel Foods in Canada. " While

acknowledging the fact that Canadian citizens want labeling of

genetically engineered foods, the report only recommends voluntary

labeling.

The CBAC has requested comments on this report until January 31st that

can be submitted through their web site.

If you are a Canadian citizen, please send comments to the CBAC. Further

background details and instructions on how to send comments to CBAC

online can be found on The Campaign's web site at:

http://www.thecampaign.org/canada.htm

Thanks for taking the time to let your opinion be known by participating

in the appropriate ACTION ALERT for your country!
