1. A Nice Spice

 

If you want to practice cholesterol-friendly cooking while tempting your

taste buds, cook with ginger. This popular herb will add spice and

citrus-like flavor to meats and vegetables without increasing the fat,

cholesterol, or sodium content of the food. What's more, preliminary

animal studies suggest that ginger may contain compounds that protect

against high cholesterol.

 

 

2. Red Heads

 

You can make a more nutritious salad by sprinkling in some red cabbage.

One cup of chopped red cabbage will add about 50 milligrams of vitamin C

to your salad, and will add fiber, foliate, and potassium, as well. What's

more, some studies have revealed that a high intake of cruciferous veggies

such as cabbage may be protective against certain kinds of cancer,

including bladder and breast cancer.

 

 

3. Can You Change Your Metabolism?

 

Are you doing everything right: eating a lowfat diet and getting to the

weights a couple times a week? Unfortunately, six months of disciplined

behavior like this can leave some women without any weight-loss benefit.

So can one really change her metabolism? The answer varies, but one thing

is for sure: you can lose weight trying. For background info, here are the

three components of metabolism:

 

--Resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns

by breathing, regenerating cells, and basically just existing.

 

--Thermic effect of food (TEF) is the calories burned during digestion.

 

--Unrestricted physical activity (UPA) is what you use in Step class,

weight lifting, walking and other movement routines.

So is it truly possible to influence your body's natural levels of

metabolic activity? In some extreme cases (for someone who has literally

never exercised), perhaps. But generally speaking, exercising more and

eating less, period loses weight. A woman in one study found that her goal

of building more muscle helped her shed pounds, even though it didn't

alter her metabolic stats. Some research indicates that every pound of

muscle you carry may burn up to 35 calories, versus just two for fat.

 

So many women blame their body fat on a slow metabolism, but one woman's

case proves that lifestyle changes can make you fitter, healthier, and

leaner without any metabolic shifts. She reports high energy levels and

10 pounds dropped! Ultimately, she discovered she hadn't overeaten,

rather, she had under moved.
