Hello everyone,

I have a friend that has just been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and is

wondering if after he has a glass of wine or a beer, can he have a piece of

cheese as long as he has a carb. with it?

Thanks for your advice,

Deborah

Deborah,

Your friend really needs to educate himself about what is healthy for

a diabetic to eat. Alcholohic drinks posess a high quantity of sugar and

adding a carb just adds more sugar to his already over-worked pancrease.

Carbs turn into sugar in our system and most diabetics know that they have to

carefully balance what they eat so they don't get too high a concentration of

carbs or sugar. Carbs usually turn out to be a bigger culprit than sugar

does because it is hidden in so many foods if you aren't aware. My husband

still gets so confused about what he can safely eat and what he can't and

what is too much since he is diabetic also. He is a type 2 though.
