In this tradition, milk is poured over the lingham during prayer ceremonies, symbolizing fertilization and new birth. All linghams come from a certain river in India which flows from the himalayas, although I can't remember offhand the name of that river. Each Lingam contains sacred markings symbolic of the marks on Lord Shiva's forehead.
