Quite honestly - the plastic bags we have here are very thin and biodegradable - and free - if we no longer get these with our shopping we will have to buy non degradable plastic bags to put our rubbish in and buy bags - again non degradable - to put our shopping in - they are also taking about bring back the big paper bags for our shopping - we stopped using these about 30 years ago to save trees ....... either way someone will profit from us - everything we use causes something else to suffer - just part of life?

Readers, don't be confused! Jane, if the platic bags you are using

are biodegradable, that's one thing, but I know the ones we use in

the U.S.A. are not. It really isn't such a difficult thing to switch

to canvas or other cloth bags for use in the store. I know I forgot

to take the bags into the store with me the 1st couple of times, but

now it has become a habit. Give it a try; it's such a simple thing we

can all do to help reduce pollution that has a long-lasting impact on

the health of the only planet we have.

Say no to paper AND plastic bags. Paper bags waste more energy than plasitc and do not break down well in landfills. Plastic bags can be made to break down well and are more energy-efficient (less costly) than paper but they do contaminate our ecology.--- On Fri, 8/1/08, Jo <colohei> wrote:

Meantime people will now need to buy plastic bags to put out their rubbish in and those bags will be non-degradable

The bags you want to use for your shopping will not be biodegradable either.

Before plastic became fashionable we put our garbage out in steel garbage cans (biodegradable). Garbage disposers and compost piles will help keep the garbager from smelling up the cans.

A good shopping bag can be made of bidegradable canvas. And, even if it is a plastic reusable shopping bag, it can last many years before it can be recycled.

Many of the plastic products that we have grown accustomed to are just becoming proven inconvenient conveniences.

These bags are sold here locally at the Farmers Market and not only do they make a nice little income but they also are contributing the health of our planet. Hemp is the answer in so so so many forms! Leaning more about hemp and the sabbatoge of using hemp will make your blood boil! But for now the hemp bags can be found at (and I am sure this is only one source of many) www.hempbags.com

Be gentle on yourselves!

Another thing that absolutely appals me is the amount of plastic packaging there is. For instance at our 'Playland' they serve the pop etc... in these elaborate hard plastic futuristically designed monster mug contraptions---made of hard plastic that people just toss afterwards . These things are about a foot and a half tall and made of heavy durable plastic. It just appals me. Also in cafaterias every meal is on plastic plates and drinks in plastic cups. I remember when I used to wash and reuse plastic bags from produce---that consciousness is long gone....it is all just overwhelming. Another thing is at our major bus/train stops etc.. they push these garbage daily newspapers--advertising rags with sensationalist garbage in them on people---then they pile up in the buses trains and the clean up crew comes around with giant plastic bags and chucks them--that is like everytime the trains do a circuit. all the while we are whining abot our disappearing

forests.... Just dumbfounding... BeaTony De Angelis <tntstuart wrote: Before plastic became fashionable we put our garbage out in steel garbage cans (biodegradable).
