Guest guest
Most TCM schools are 3 or 4 years. This is sufficient to sit for the NCCAOM national exams which are used for every state that has a practice act except California, which has it's own exam. Once you graduate from an accredited school and have passed the NCCAOM exams you are eligible to apply for a license in most states. The difference in title is determined by the State and not the level of licensure or education. A licensed acupuncturist is basically the same as a doctor of oriental medicine but they practice in different states. NM, RI, NV and FL I believe grant the title of " doctor " . Most other states it is " licensed acupuncturist " or similar. You can look up State by State here: http://www.nccaom.org/StateData.asp Different States also have different laws concerning the use of herbs, tuina (massage) etc. Some States are very progressive (like New Mexico where one can be a primary care doctor), and others are not so progressive (like Mississippi where one must be an MD to do acupuncture). I hope this helps! Chris peanutbutterandjelly1975 [peanutbutterandjelly1975] Sunday, November 14, 2004 6:29 AM acupuncture acupuncture training? Hello, I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on what type of training/college you need to become a licensed acupuncturist? I have heard all sorts of things from a few years on up to ten years, and I thought maybe someone could give me some insight into the training needed for this career field. Also, what is the difference between a licensed acupuncturist and a doctor of oriental medicine? (I'm in Florida, USA) Any information/advice would be appreciated! Thanks, Lei
