When I was in the 5th grade I antagonized another kid by being a smart mouth. We were playing baseball, and when I turned away from him, he hit me in the back of the head with a baseball bat. Unfortunately for him, he didn't commit himself to his strike, so I just turned around, knocked him to the ground... ....sat on his stomach with my knees on his arms pinning him there, while I proceeded to knock the holy snot out of him... ....at least until I was pulled off of him by a teacher...marched into the principle's office, and the principle promply told me, " John, don't be a bully! " ... This was also around the time that my father took me to kiwanis and got me into the boxing ring... ....a place, where if you didn't go in hitting hard, and with intention, you were looked down upon and considered a coward. So, on one hand, fighting was bad and if you did it, even in self- defense, you were a bad guy, a bully... ....on the other hand, a fighting spirit was good, and if you didn't have it, you were considered a coward, and you were just not worth much... And interesting complexity for a kid about 9 years old. My personal opinion is, that we are being brainwashed politically into becoming a nation of whimps and cowards... Some type of adversity is necessary for growth, for learning, for the evolution of the spirit. You cannot avoid trouble in any of life's arenas by walking away from them. We strive for peace, but it's our enemies that give us strength, motivation and maturation. And, if we had no enemies (please chunk up for the big picture here, okay?), we would have to invent them because our strength and growth only come from adversity. You only become tempered steel by going through the fire. Now, does that mean you need to fight? Nope. You can get a protector, like some people do, unfortunately they'll come to late to protect you... ....you can tuck tail and run, like some people do... ....you can bury your head in the sand and ignore any " situation " around you, hoping against hope that you don't become the target... Back in 1979 I and a friend were in a parking lot, late at night, going in to buy a case of bud for a bunch of my black belts... ....walking towards the store I noticed this skinny tramp walking towards us, and he had a knife in his hand, sort of concealed by his thigh... I stopped, POINTED MY FINGER AT HIM, laughed REAL LOUD, and said to my buddy (also a black belt), " hay, look at that ASSHOLE, I think he wants to rob us... " ....and the thug scampered away. People have been whomping on other people for millions of years. Using rocks, clubs, knives, guns, whatever... ....and those who prey on others are out there looking for the victims, the fearful, the ones that stick their heads in the sand... So I've taught over 37,391 people the Secrets of Self-defense... How to be careful...How to handle themselves and to handle weapons, because you can't defend against a knife unless you know how to use a knife... ....you can't defend against a boxer unless you now something about boxing, blab, blab, blab... ....you can't defend against a thinker unless you can think! The easiest way to stay out of fights is to learn how to see... ....and to learn how to guard your tongue. A person that ridicules another, or disses another will soon be in a fight, or will be running from a fight, or will live the life of a hermit. Of course, when you get in a fight, stop the talking and start the whomping. I've written 28 books and manuals on this, and produced another 362 how-to videos on the combat aspects, but this is enough for now. Author, " Mental Training of a Warrior " , " Ninja Mind, Warrior Mentality for Street Combat " , " The Master's Kicking Guide " , " Ki Training For Speed Fighting " , blab, blab, blab...
