testing for malaborption of proteins

Hi Everyone,Does anyone know if there is a test to see if you are absorbing and utilizing proteins? My father passed away last week. His serum albumin and prealbumin levels were exceedingly low. His cell memebranes were weakened, and he accrued fluids in his lung and pleura. The doctors tried Lasix to diuresis the fluids, which temporarily helped and they did a thoracenctesis to draw fluids from the pleura/lungs. They drew off 1 and 1/2 liters of fluid, and within 3-4 hours later, double the fluid returned.... Does anyone know why this would occur? I am trying to research this...any guidance would be most appreciated.Thanks kindly,Nancy
