Hi,

I am new to acu & would appreciate some guidance on the treatment of stubborn Qi

stagnation in shoulder neck region. My treatment seems to be working well so far

but I'm stuck as to the prognosis and intervals in between the individual

treatments.

Here is a case study: he is a 46 y.o. fit male who spends most of his working

day behind the computer. For the last 5 years or so he has been experiencing

'pressure or discomfort' in the left top of the shoulder (never on the right

hand side). It physically manifests as a very, very tight knot/lump close to GB

21. From here it was travelling up towards the occiput, causing headaches that

were diagnosed by GP as tension type (however often associated with vomiting if

he didn't take any analgesics). No visual disturbances present. Headaches fairly

frequent, only left sided. The problems started when he was a Uni student

(stress). About 30 years ago he also suffered a whiplash in a car accident.

Scans years ago showed it as an 'overdeveloped muscle'. When he raises arm in

front of him, this lump bulges out. All (5) the treatments helped, (it got loose

and more comfortable) , headaches went away after the first Rx, but the

discomfort always comes back. He can't pinpoint what it brings on, sometimes

stress, sometimes apparently nothing specific.

I used migrating cups, tiger warmer (moxa), massage. I used points like GB 20,

GB 21, Bl 10, GB 41, Co 15, Co 16, SJ 14 and needling (4 needles) around the

knot and on top of it. I also gave him yoga stretches to do which he finds

helpful.

I' m planning to do reflexology for stress management. Can someone advice please

on how to continue with acu? I.e. how often to give treatments and how long it

might take to fix it completely, if possible.

Thank you so much, Renata

Hi Renata, I'm a little uncomfortable writing here because I'm not an

acupuncturist, but am interested. I did study shiatsu many years ago and may

continue that. I developed a similar prob as your client when I worked

full-time behind a computer. I think I started spiraling down when I lost my

cat. It's important to have someone or some thing one can love and exchange

emotions with. I was in a long distance relationship at the time that left me

very lonely. I did start feeling significantly better when I got more involved

locally, including on the intimate level. I'm not sure how this translates to

acu treatment. All the best, Louise
