I have looked for info on this and couldn't find anything. Sometimes the Western metaphysical symbolism of fire, earth, air, and water don't correspond to the Chinese concepts of Fire, Earth, Water, Wood, and Metal. There may be some information in the medicine and philosophy of India which will bridge the two. There are many metaphoric systems and trying to get them all to fit into one box won't work without changing them to fit the box. For me, the real secret to all of these systems isn't which elements mean what, or which symbols mean what, but the fact that we can use symbols to metaphorically describe different levels of existance. Wood is the liver on the yin organ level, the GB on the yang organ level, the color green in the visible spectrum, shouting in the human voice, the etherial spirit/hun on that spirit level and so forth. The secret isn't in what the metaphor means but the fact that the metaphor expresses itself in every concievable level. Yin and yang are not simply the shady side of the hill and the sunny side, but you've taken the universe and broken it up into two parts that make a whole. Five elements takes the whole universe and breaks it up into five phases. The western four elements (water, air, earth and fire) takes the universe and breaks it up into four segments. Astrology breaks things up into 12. Kaballa likes 10, Chinese culture likes the 8 number. We all (USA residents) live in a state senatorial district, and we live in an assembly district unless you live in Nebraska, but that's a different story. The district boundaries are different. The boundaries of the universe delineated by the five elements is different than the universe delineated by the western four elements. Again, the key point is metaphor, that is the means by which we can percieve pure energy in all its manifestations. THAT is the secret, not the lines between the elements or signs, or symbols, but the verticality of how it manifests. Carolyn Myss, intuitive healer or something like that, talks about " symbolic sight " as a necessity to understanding how pathologies arise. Constipation describes the inability to let go, for instance. All these metaphorical systems can be a useful tool, but it is important to understand how the tool works. Metaphor. Guest guest
Why atmosphere = air? What is air exactly? Josep. Lee Lieske [capuaco] Friday, August 31, 2001 5:17 PM acupuncture acupuncture What is air? This is a Five Element question. What element do the Chinese consider the atmosphere to be? I would imagine that air is Metal energy because the Lungs are the Metal-Yin Organ and absorb air. In the I Ching it is said the " Thunder " and " Wind " correlates to the Wood element and " Heaven " and " Lake " are Metal. I assume that " Heaven " is synonymous with air...
