Another perspective of TM

I have been staying out of the TM conversation just to see what either supported

and contrasted my experience. Mostly neither, but here is my two cents...

On the negative side, I have seen much more of the recovering catholic syndrome

from TM'ers than the experience that was mentioned in Docs post. But in many

ways I don't think the cause of this is what Maharishi was trying to teach. It

seems to me that the TM movement in America and Europe was so familiar with the

religious paradigm that they just brought the principles of TM into this already

established social paradigm.

When I went to MIU in 90-95 it was much closer to a conservative religious

school than a hippie colony. The personality of the school seemed to be a

reaction against its hippie roots and was trying to gain status as a base for

scientific research in the realm of consciousness and as a business school

promoting sustainable enterprise.

I had many friends that all went off to live their lives. I can't see any

trends towards success or failure. I also don't recall any body that I knew

that shared a similar experience to Doc's friend. But this was the 90's.

I imagine Doc's friend fell more victim to the Hippie TM of the 70's then the

Religious right TM of the 90's.

My personal experience with the mantra technology was that it realy just didn't

sit right with me. I had an amazingly poerful first experience and all in all a

continued good time. Learning the TM Sidhi Program dramatically changed my

understanding of consciousness.

First, I was having a good time with Mantra, Mantra, Mantra.... But with the

Sidhi Program it just wasn't so simple and enjoyable. The Sidhis are an amazing

program. Practicing the Flying Technique in the Domes with over 1500 other

participants is really a great time.... sometimes.... On the good side

commanding ones awareness to separate from the bounds of akasha, matter, and

float is quite cool. So far it is commonplace to hop around for a while riding

this wave. This is a great experience and it is really much different than

doing the same thing physically. But on the bad side in the domes there is a

weird heaviness and social interaction that didn't sit right with me. I

practiced mostly on my own and often failed my Dome attendance.

So after this introduction I started to play with consciousness on my own.

Transcending and practicing a Sutra seemed normal to me so I just played around

trying to make sense of it all. I enjoyed what I came up with and am still

developing my own practice and understanding.

Now I understand that what was happening in the Domes was that many participants

just began to meditate upon their stress and continued to create this stress in

their life. In Maharishi's words, " What you put you attention on grows "

Especially in an alpha theta state!

I do feel that the TM technology comes with many hooks. But this is stated. TM

comes from the Vedic tradition, and when you learn TM the instructor sings the

Puja. The Puja is the lineage of masters of the Vedic tradition. So the hooks

of TM are the hooks of the lineage of Masters of the whole Vedic tradition. If

this tradition sits well with you then TM may just be the right ticket. This

tradition through its Hindu filter really rubs me the wrong way. But as I

continue to understand the Vedic tradition without the Hindu filter, the

religious right filter, or the hippie filter, I have more appreciation and

acceptance.

I was visiting Maharishi University of Management around the time Maharishi

past. I was actually quite amazed how little it affected me. Kinda like

touching a table. Really, no reaction.

But the vibe in town was a little dramatic. The few that I talked to were

actually quite elevated because now maharishi is Guru Dev, the great master. It

was stated that they really didn't have much of an attachment to the recent Guru

Dev.

The TM movement has really just gotten weird. Dr. John Hagelin now wears a gold

crown as Raj of America. I can't figure it out either....

My experience in the Domes was really just about the same as I mentioned above.

I visited a few times, the flying was fun, but really I didn't have any rapport.

Thanks Doc for supporting this forum.

Big Hippie Peace Hug for everyone else....;-)
