Guest guest
It's interesting, because at some point an ill person has to choose life or choose death. That could be incremental -- nudge a little one way or nudge the other. But I think that a person has to choose. And he or she has to commit to that choice on a profound level. (ok - so I'm an up-chunker!) Testing for that commitment may be difficult though. That really requires calibration.... Maybe Doc put a bug in her ear. Maybe her first reaction was an out and out rejection, but maybe at home, later on..... There was the 60 year old Yugoslav guy -- an artist -- who used to play chess with my ex (also a Serb). The old guy had a heart attack at the race track, saw the doctor but refused treatment. He came over our house that night to play chess with Zoran. Zoran tells me what happened that day. (I was going out with some friends) I said to the guy he should be in the hospital and he grumped something or other -- through the cigarette smoke. I asked him if he wanted to live or if he wanted to die. He said he wanted to die. Well, that's it then. He drank wine, smoke cigarettes and played chess. Then went home and died in his bed. (Zoran was completely surprised - he was under the impression that chess cures every ill!) This year, Scott's (my husband) uncle had a heartattack. Also a world-class stubborn guy. (built a 6 story, 2 acre castle out of railroad tressle and riverrock -- took him 20 years) Refused further treatment and went home. He was near death and figured that was it. No one could talk him out of it. He went to live at his wife's house. And he didn't have the worries of running the castle anymore. (it was turned over to the Glendora Historical Society) Now, he's almost all better and happy as a clam! So - same situation - two very stubborn guys who suffer extensive heart muscle death but one really wants to live....he just didn't really know it for a while... He wanted to live - just didn't want to take care of the castle...(he only wanted to BUILD it!) The guy who died had some terrible guilt in his heart. I don't know what it was about, but I just got the sense that he didn't believe he was worth the air... Maybe the big picture is tough to get in focus, but at some point, the sick person has to choose... Helen On Jun 22, 2005, at 5:28 PM, Greg Radke wrote: > Helen, > > Great big picture...
