LOW FAT DIET BAD FOR BONES

One hundred forty-two women, ages 42 to 54, who were pre or peri menopausal, were evaluated for their ability to absorb calcium. Those on a low-fat, high-fiber diet were found to absorb 20% less calcium than did the others. Researchers also found that women who have a higher body mass index and higher levels of vitamin D were better able to absorb calcium.

This research was done jointly by the University of Pittsburgh, The Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, and Creighton University, Omaha. - from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2000;72:466--71,

Comment: There are a number of factors important in absorption and utilization of calcium besides vitamin D: magnesium, manganese, copper, folic acid, silica, vitamin K, zinc, and vitamin A. The right kind of exercise is important, and now we see that the right kind of diet is significant, too.

Blood must also be in the proper ph

balance in order for the calcium to be metabolized correctly, or, in other

words, to get into the cell structure of bones and other tissues.  There could

many, many variables that effect whether or not the calcium gets used, whether

on a low fat/high fiber diet or not.
