Guest guest
So now we have a whole new way for them to gouge money out of us on this depression thing. If the insulin is to become be mandatory for the doctors, what happens when the rock meets a heard place and you refuse the insulin? Harvey - cathyjeromeknight Tuesday, February 24, 2009 6:54 PM Info from my Pharmacology class In my Pharmacology class today, the instructor (psychiatric RN in ahospital setting) told us two startling things:1. Depression is predicted to surpass heart disease as the number onecause of disability in the U.S. in the very near future. Granted, nowthat it is recognized as a disease, it can also be the cause ofdisability. Even so, the thought that there are more depressed peoplein the US than those with heart disease is, well ...depressing.2. In US hospitals, the government is now mandating that if aninpatient has an elevated blood sugar (even non-diabetics, there foranother condition), they are to be put on insulin -- no discussion oralternatives. We were told this has been implemented in most majorhospitals in our state, and it is now moving to the smaller hospitals. All hospitals have a specific deadline for implementation. Theinstructor said it is a matter of time before this is a mandatoryrequirement for doctors' offices, as well. What's next? Dialysis? Guest guest
We are in MI, but the instructor's understanding is that compliance is required across the nation. I assume that if someone refuses, it will be documented and left at that ....at least initially. , " Clare MAIL " <theclaremcharris wrote: > > Kathy what State has mandated this? >
Guest guest
Well... I read thru the info. including the link someone else posted. The numbers they are looking at still result in damage to the kidneys. Also, as near as I can read this, you could eat, take a reading 90 min later, and be called a diabetic.... whether you really are or not. I wonder how many people will have needles reactions to the insulin they take. In my book this is just another method of pulling more $$$ from the patients. What really is scary is if you combine the central collection of medical info, declaration of diabetes in the patient, and Sen. Arlene Specter's kill um to save $$$, it will be a first step in something that morphs in to a death sentence. For those out there who don't know it, diabetes supplies are very expensive. Just the test strips cost over $1 each. Testing before eating to determine if and how much to take, testing after eating to determine how well it's working and if changes need to be made, testing when not feeling well, or after/during strenuous work, testing in the middle of the night to make sure your spouse isn't going to wake up to a body, or a vegetable.... gets expensive... Or, you can just go .... eh... this is good enough. They will use it as an excuse for euthanasia. - " cathyjeromeknight " <cwmsknight Wednesday, February 25, 2009 12:51 PM Re: Info from my Pharmacology class We are in MI, but the instructor's understanding is that compliance is required across the nation. Guest guest
I sent this post to a friend that is an RN.. Her response to me is below my comment. It shocked me as well. Even type II diabetics are usually started on just a pill.. Insulin has to be monitored very closely.. and is usually the last resort for controlling blood sugar. ~Joanne My nurse friend's response: " I know it is true about the insulin. People come in and are put on steroids, which elevates the blood sugar. They are temporarily put on insulin to treat it. This has happened for years. The part about depression doesn't surprise me at all. I think this has already happened as well.
