Go opposite limb on opposite side (if right leg go to left arm) and palpate for ashi points along all the channels from blow the ankle/wrist to the hip/shoulder and needle the ashi points. If you can get him to pinpoint where the pain is you can get more specific with the balancing meridians and locations. I recommend reading his book or going to his classes. They will transform your practice! You can roll up a towel and treat the points where the pain is as if the towel was the limb. I've never had occasion to try this, but people have told me it works. You should also be able to try opposite limb needling. Pain=qi and blood stagnation. Since there is no limb there, I would think it would be mainly qi stagnation. Ramachandran invented it get your client to get a mirror and a cardboard box. Seeing the other hand move in a mirror image tricks the brain and helps integrate and solve the problem. Also of course korean hand therapy and auricular therapy can be effective.
