hi folks:

just joined this group and am off to medical school in Jan. I am

trying to convince a surgeon to start using acu for his patients.

his response was better than I thought but not great.

he claimed no standardization for acu education. I said they have

LAcs now that take about 3 years of post grad ed.

he said the hospital does not grant priveleges. i said they could go

to the Lacs offices before and after surgery. does anyone know of

nationally known hospitals that use acu? does anyone have experience

working with pre and post op patients to reduce pain, etc.?

i also need to know of any randomized controlled trials that I could

show him.

any help is appreciated.

I think a few of the hospitals in Denver, Colorado USA

do grant privileges to some of the local L.Ac., one

for sure is a MD only in China, but I think has

privileges at Children's Hospital and National Jewish.

His name is Li Xin Zhang and is a teacher at Colorado

School of TCM in Denver.

BTW, L.Ac. is only a title that is give by statute in

a particular state. One minute you are xyz (in

Colorado R.Ac.) the next you are L.Ac. by sole virtue

of a new statute. So don't read too much into titles.

From 1986 to present...the only place in the world....certainly in the US

that acupuncturists were officially titled 'Acupuncture Physicians' is in

Florida. The allopathic association ATTACKED that use in July 2000 and in August

2001

they LOST their case.

Florida further saw fit to ADD into Law & Rules the title DOM - Doctor of

Oriental Medicine as has been used in several other states for quite some time.

The comment that LAc is the ONLY title given by state statute is inaccurate.

80% of the US fully trained practitioners are located in 5 states - all of

which use the titles ranging from Doctor to Physician and who are PRIMARY CARE

PROVIDERS. The majority of the balance of approximately 35 states consisting of

about 20% of the remaining number of US practitioners are suppressed in the

title of LAc along with the status of technician.

On one hand, titles may not mean much....on the other they mean 'the world'.

Those who are clinically & didactically trained to the highest standards and

who are confident in the stand-alone wholistic medical system of AP/OM which

they administer....should be proud to call themselves 'doctors' or 'physicians'

and resist from hiding in the bushes.
