Regarding appropriate music in the treatment room:

Several years ago, I performed acupuncture on my

75-year-old father-in-law who was undergoing

chemotherapy following surgery for bladder cancer. I

had been used to playing what to me were very relaxing

new age CDs. His request (which I honored) was music

by his life-long favorite (Johnny Cash).

Cash's songs felt a little strange (and even gloomy)

to me at first, yet this was one of the most memorable

treatment experiences ever. Later, at the luncheon

following my father-in-law's funeral, I played the

music again. As I drove home, the song " Ring of Fire "

filled me with a sense of his passion and I knew why

he felt like such a " soulmate " to me. The memory, and

unexpected opportunities to listen again to Johnny

Cash, continue to treat ME to this day!

If there is a moral to this story, it is simply to

honor and trust our patients' requests and to nurture

them in a manner that they can truly receive.
