Hi Dieter,

I have two thoughts. One is buying using either loose herbs or granules of

single herbs. The second is buying in volume. Considering teh volume of a

detox program and the likelihood of the small number of ingredients it should be

possible to get a good volume discount. One of the program members can mix them

according to your supervised direction.

I don't advocate this for the use of herbs in general and in fact oppose the

prescripbing and preparation of Chinese herbs by untrained people but detox is a

special case because of the social magnitude of the problem and the lack of

resources.

Herbal formulas: I tried some from the literature i have, most important

is how we can get it, i tried to get some over local pharmacies, a cure

for 14 days would cost almost 140 DM, which is about 75 $, too much to do

it on large scale.

our detox station works like this: doctors are mostly occupied by dates with

patients in our methadone ambulance, which is a flat below the detox area.

Customers stay for about 3 weeks, detoxing mainly from methadone or heroine,

basic treatment of decreasing doses of methadone, and treatment of increasing

withdrawel sysmptoms with whatever we have,

being e.g.

magnesium high doses

concentrated salvia officinalis in form of pills(overly sweating, not very

effective)

tricyclic antidepressives (for this i want s.th else),

blockers of sympathic-beta-receptors(want s.th. else for this too)

clonidine in very low doses, (against typical muscletension symptoms,

i would like s.th. else)

NADA-acupuncture

a variety of herbal teas available as tea bags

Bach Flower Remedies

low-dose neuroleptics that people can take for sleep induction,

which is nowadays not taken so often anymore

and a lot of other stuff, that i probably forgot. (i am on 2 weeks off work now)

in the morning there is a doctor visiting there, from 9.00 pm for about 1 hour.

during that time, any changes of medikation according to daily sysmptoms

is noted in the chart. if i build in some new medication, i have to give

advice in how to apply it.

The detox main staff is ecotrophological/therapeutic oriented but academically

trained and open to wholistic approaches, and favours applications that

counteract the predominance of " chemicals " .

But all this has to be simple to apply and to decide without big talking.

A group of maybe 5 different formulas to apply would be managable,

which can be decided at our morning visits and be done in a certain documented

way, results being protocolled day-to-day in the morning visits.

For the diagnostics of application, to decide by the doctors, if and which one

of the formulas to apply, there shuold be a short documentation, on how

to decide this correctly, as far as this is possible, without having

full tcm training. My collegues are very adaptive to therapeutic principles,

coming from different countries and educational systems.

The method of making decocts seems too occupying time and focus resources,

so better in the form of powders or even better bolusses or pills, which we

can have a certain quantity of stored, and must be easy to fill up.

We dont have the time and resources to give or have a full tcm training,

our main approach is empirical, " what helps and what is practical " .

Concerning " social magnitude " , yes psychosocial implications are extreme,

considered from a more " civilized " point of view, since many customers e.g.

maybe go on to prison, if the detox fails, yet many of them are even too well

adapted to this " heroic " lifestyle, and we can clearly see their steps of

development and growth, which are in contrast to the drama that tends to come

in, slowly and consistantly growing up from inside.

So, any help in bringing in herbal formulas into our " running system "

will be appreciated.

Well if it's great then it must be mine. (I remember using the word

Though I've not a clue to what I wrote.

What post # was it Sue?

Pretty sure it was yours. Don't remember the post #--have been doing other

things lately and not here much. I can't remember what it was about, either.

But I said it was great, we can be sure it was. ;) Sue

Hi Sue:  Could you describe some of the techniques that you mention that were

taught by Doc and the "popping" points.

To valsava you can hold your nose and blow hard with mouth shut. It increases

internal pressure and can equalize inside/outside eardrums during pressure changes.

Used when pressure is increasing--descending.

But I also do it while ascending as it makes the eardrums more pliable so they will

do what you want later, on descent.

You can have similar effects chewing gum or ice. I can do it just by moving muscles

in my ear, but not everyone can learn that I hear.

Hope that answers what you asked. I've been away so long, I can't remember the

original post now.

Sue
