Actually, selenium is used as one of the precursors for production of the antioxidant glutathione, and it's the glutathione that escorts mercury from the body. It takes three molecules of glutathione to escort one molecule of aluminum, two for mercury. Arsenic toxicity is reduced with selenium supplementation, and selenium toxicity is reduced with arsenic. The other glutathione precursors are amino acid peptides which contain cysteine, such as glutamylcysteine and cystine, the rate limiting factors in glutathione production, and glutamine and glycine. What I'm saying is that all the precursors must be present for best effect. The therapeutic window for selenium is 200-600 mcg daily, but higher doses have been studied and found to shrink tumors and reduce both HepC and HIV viral load (at 1100 mcg daily).
