Guest guest
First of all, I am 60 years old and just learned to windsurf and would hardly call myself elderly nor do I think any of my client/patients would. That aside, I consider elderly to be 70 - 100 years old and I have an extensive practice in treating them. What is your attraction to this group of people?? Guest guest
Dear Sir, I am working in the health care sector as senior citizen's caretaker in Copenhagen, Denmark to raise the money I need for acupuncture school. (I actually studied my freshman year in Dongguk Royal University in LA). Through my work with senior citizens I have come to discover that they are probably the single largest group of overmedicated people I have ever come across.... they often have all kinds of pains for which two or three doctors each prescribe painkillers ..all of them have huge sideeffects... i.e. difficulty in walking due to dizziness making them fall down and breaking their hips, depression and so on... This is just one of many reasons why I have taken an interest in the elderly I find that this group of people, that I have been working with for a long time, would benefit imensely from TCM treatments... It might help them end their days more dignified or painless or..... ....So I am looking out for some advice, you know, if there is something anyone think would be valuable for me to know..... Sincerely Thomas bobbiaqua wrote:First of all, I am 60 years old and just learned to windsurf and would hardly call myself elderly nor do I think any of my client/patients would. Guest guest
Thanks for responding. I agree with you totally and I really respect the work you are doing with the elderly. My patient population of elderly are also way over medicated. Acupuncture does work really well as would herbal medicine but it's hard to do because of all the medication and our inability to get doctors to agree to interface. Some other things which work really well are Qi Gong and Tai Qi and even Yoga. Balance and movement therapies. I think really that one of the big ways we need to work is to be able to show and persuade people to begin taking better care of themselves from 50 on if not before!! And to work towards getting people off medication as a solution for their problems and only used temporarily until lifestyle changes can right the imbalance. As for your patient population any intervention you can accomplish would be wonderful. In treating the elderly going slow and dealing with deficiency heat are usually the issues. There can be some excess heat if the diet is really bad. Most of them do not do enough exercise. I don't know if this helps but I think you are on the right path so GOOD LUCK!!!!
