Have you or someone ever tried the combination? I write: I have no idea about this one. I assume by " envoy " he meant guide - as in the sense used in ranking members of a formula (emperor, assistant, etc). I was taught that Wu Jia Pi enters the liver and kidney, and that Yuan Zhi primarily enters the heart and lung (some sources say also the kidney). Maybe Shen Nung was thinking of Wu Jia Pi's ability to expel wind-damp, which might be enhanced by Yuan Zhi's drying nature & its affinity for the lungs, which regulate the water passages. ==== I wrote that last sentence with the idea in mind that Shen Nung had classified Wu Jia Pi as an inferior class wood, so I was thinking primarily of its dispersing (as opposed to tonic) function. Then I looked it up, and saw that wind-damp wasn't really mentioned (at least in the Blue Poppy translation) -- it says, " It mainly treats heart and abdominal mounting qi and abdominal pain. It boosts the Qi and heals limpness, enabling the [limp] child to walk instantly. [it also treats] flat abscesses, sores, and genital erosion. " So, perhaps it was Yuan Zhi's ability to enter the heart channel that Shun Nung was thinking of - given that first sentence. Who knows?
