Guest guest
Went into a county Health Dept (in MO) today for work to talk about what the role of the facility would be in case of " the pandemic " as we had gotten some info from them about making a plan and educating employees. The lady wasn't real talkative at first. We, as a SNF, are not involved in their initial plans. When I asked if there would be mandatory vaccinations she said we should teach the employees to stay at home to quarantine and isolate themselves. She did confirm that H1N1 has mutated and is not very sure if the vaccinations that are being made at this time will do any good. Said it would probably be as effective as the regular flu shots are against the flus and made a face to indicate they are not very effective. She did say that they have been sent their allotment of Tamiflu, but that they have not had direction on who it would go to or when. My boss talked a little about sending patients to the hospital and she wasn't very talkative. So I mentioned that I figured they would not be taking the elderly and those with chronic disease. She nodded confirmation as my boss interrupted again asking if they had some type of plan as to where they would put people. I told her that in hospitals and home health agencies we were taught that the emergency management, I mean FEMA, had a plan that involved all in case of a natural disaster but had never been taught about a pandemic. She said well they are calling it a mass prophylactic exercise. We laughed. She told us the N95 masks were being recommended and to educate our staff on what to do for their own families and that supplies for approximately 2 weeks be had. That was about it. We are a very rural community. It takes at least 20 mintutes to get to a town with a Walmart Thought I would pass this info on. N
