Have Publicity, Need Stories

Fellow acupuncturists,

I want to ask your help with a book I’m writing, and, at the same time, help

you get more patients and publicity.

If you’re not familiar with me, in addition to writing a column for

Acupuncture Today, I have been writing to the public about Chinese medicine

for nearly 5 years on www.PulseMed.org, and we’ve reached more than 300,000

people internationally. I’ve also reached a few people by working with and

being featured in Real Simple, Glamour, and ESPN magazines, and by making

appearances on radio stations around the country. I do this because so few

people understand the power and sophistication of Chinese medicine, so many

people need help, and I love to write and speak.

The next step for me to tell the masses how much we can help them is to

finish a book. With a book, I will have a launching pad for the numerous

radio appearances I’d like to do. My goal is to sell at least 1 million of

these books. I think this is a humble goal, considering that perhaps 28

million Americans have tried acupuncture. And while I’m reaching those

people, I can tell them about you.

The book’s working title is, “Ancient Chinese Secrets: How to Heal and

Prevent Disease So You Can Feel Better and Live the Life of Your Dreams.”

It’s about what regular people can do at home to help themselves with common

health concerns. These include constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, fatigue,

weight, insomnia, colds and flu’s, headaches, migraines, beauty, and

longevity. I’ve already written most of the material, but I need some color

from you to make it great.

What I’m looking for from ye acupuncturists is STORIES. What I can give you

in return is PUBLICITY. If you submit a story I include in the book, I’ll

name you and give your practice and contact information in the book, on the

radio, and on the book’s website.

So, every time someone in your local area downloads the e-book or buys the

print version, you reach a potential client. You’ll establish yourself as a

noteworthy acupuncturist in your area. If I’m on the radio and your story

comes up, I’ll mention your name. If I’m on the radio in your area, I’ll

mention your story and name. (If it’s about you, and you’d like to keep it

private, I can retell it as if it were one of your patients and still

mention you as the acupuncturist)

To make this publicity more valuable for you, I’ll limit each city (or metro

area) to one acupuncturist. So, the sooner you respond, and the more

stories and ideas you send me, the better chance you have of being THE

ACUPUNCTURIST FOR YOUR AREA.

On that note, these cities are already taken:

* Pasadena, CA

* Asheville, NC

* Charlotte, NC

* San Diego, CA

* Waco, TX

* NYC, NY

* Portland, ME

* Boston, MA

So, you’ll be in the book, mentioned on the radio, and on the book’s

website. If you didn’t read my latest Acupuncture Today column

(http://www.acupuncturetoday.com/archives2004/apr/04carter.html), you may

not know that my PulseMed.org has been the most successful acupuncturist

directory- those listed on it get more patients than from any other

directory. Why is that? Because I understand the web. So I can get you

found- your prospective patients WILL HEAR about you. Your name won’t just

disappear into cyberspace as it does with other directory owners.

How much would that kind of publicity cost you if you paid for it? Well,

you can’t buy that kind of publicity, but the valuable web presence costs

about $100 a year usually, and radio time isn’t cheap- so I’d guess into the

hundreds of dollars for the whole thing. But THIS IS FREE. All you have to

do is a little bit of writing!

Here’s what I’m looking for:

1. STORIES ABOUT YOURSELF using what you’ve learned about Chinese medicine

(this includes herbs, lifestyle changes, acupressure, moxa, diet, etc.) to

treat one or more of these concerns (constipation, diarrhea, heartburn,

fatigue, weight, insomnia, colds and flu’s, headaches, migraines, beauty,

and longevity). I think these may be richer than the next section, because

we know more about CM than our patients do.

2. STORIES OF YOUR PATIENTS doing things at home, changing their lifestyle,

diet, doing acupressure, etc. and it helping them with one of these

concerns. I DO NOT want stories of YOUR acupuncture or herbs healing them.

That’s a different book. ;-) This one is about what patients and regular

people can do for themselves. Try to get out of the treatment, acupuncture,

etc. frame of mind.

3. IDEAS and TIPS for these concerns - they may be within the context of a

story above, or you may not have an interesting story, so just send the

tips.

" The next major advance in the health of the American people will be

determined by what the individual is willing to do for himself. " - John

Knowles

HOW should the stories be written?

I don’t want each story to be more than half a single-spaced page of

12-point font. 500 words or less. That’s the length.

But what makes a good story? Here are some ideas:

* Was the person’s (you or the patient) personality, disease, or

circumstances exceptional? (For example, a parachutist who always got

diarrhea while in the air)

* Was there more adversity than normal?

* Was it a strange sounding cure?

* Did something surprising happen?

* Did the person do something wrong that no one should do?

* Did the story or situation make you laugh out loud?

* Was it poignant or touching in some way?

JUST DO IT!

Brainstorm, do some writing, and send me what you’ve got! Don’t worry about

the phrasing- If it needs work, I’ll edit it, polish it, etc. If I need

clarification on a story or tip, I’ll email you back.

Remember, the sooner you send it in, and the more stories and tips you send

me, the more likely you are to be chosen as THE ACUPUNCTURIST for your area.

What else will you get? I’ll send you a free copy of the book, my

compliments. Now, isn’t that enough?

WHEN’S THE DEADLINE?

Very, very soon. I’m sending the book out to my own personal editors in

April, so I need these stories and tips by March 29th. That gives you a

week. I figure it’ll take you a couple hours, max, to think of your stories

and tips and jot them down. And I know you can find 2 hours or less in the

next 7 days. It’s worth that very small investment to get HUGE print, web,

and radio publicity for the next few years.

If this seems intimidating to you, start immediately by printing this email

and listing names of people next to the diseases they had success with.

Write a few notes next to each name. You can take a break there, if you

want. Then begin writing out the stories and tips… you’ll have several days

to write out the stories and tips if you write out names, etc. first.

When you’re ready, email the information to me at bbcarter.

But don’t wait- remember the deadline and that other acupuncturists in your

city may also be sending information in.

I’m looking forward to partnering with you

to help more and more people with Chinese medicine!

Hi Brian.

I also believe that publicity is the key to TCM's further inclusion

into mainstream medicine. I call all practitioners to not only write

and send their article to Brian but to also write for their local

newspapers, national magazines, web sites, etc.

Also associations should have active PR departments dedicated to

getting our message across.

I already have a few pieces of work on your site Brian. I wish you

all the very best. Good luck!
