[CrystalHW] Virus??

Hi Peggy,

Seems your computer may have a virus in it and using your email

address book to send it out (hope I am wrong here). I have received

it twice now, luckily my virus protection found it before it could

get in (I hope!!)

W32.Bugbear.mm is a HIGH risk virus....and it is not necessarily Peggy's

computer at all.

This worm has the ability to spoof, or forge, the '' field. (Often set to

an address found on the victim's machine). Additionally the virus can use a

fabricated from address, by taking the name before the " @ " sign of one address,

and the domain name after the " @ " sign of another address. (ie.

name1 + name2 = name1)

You can read more about it here -

http://vil.mcafee.com/dispVirus.asp?virus_k=99728

There is a removal tool as well.

I think it is the responsibility of everyone, especially those on public forums,

to keep your virus scanners up to date! If you don't have virus detection

installed, you can get it free at http://www.grisoft.com

This does not come from my computer but someone who's system has the

list in it's address book.

some virus posts now are actually including parts of posts or files

from peoples systems in an effort to trick people into opening them.

Most of the new virus spoof addresses so they appear to come from a

different address than the actual sender . The fact that the post has

an attachment proves it did not come through CHW

My posts to the group go through just as yours do.

Any mail that really is from the CHW group will go through and

will not have any attachments

The list is set to strip out any attached files before sending them to

the group.

This list is also supposed to be a plain text group

If you are on digests You will only get digests from CHW .

I also have heavy duty up to date anti virus programs on my computer

scanning all mail incoming and out going .I scanned again ( twice) and

found nothing on my computer .

I know it is very upsetting .

I see now that I got that post too but of course my anti virus

program stripped out any virus. I think someone may have collected the

e-mail addresses of the list. You cannot hide them without losing many

of the group functions unfortunately.

Looking at the message source it appears that this may in fact be a

deliberate attack. The from address is rosequartz @hotmail and I do not

have a hotmail account in that name. It also appears to have originated

in Australia. I did probably recently offend a ( probably psychotic)

person who lives in AU who is infamous for attacking folks who they

see as enemies by faking their address and disseminating virus in their

name and other hacker activities . ( I am in favor of world peace though)

I don't know that this is the person or cause of the problem but it is

quite co-incidental that this should occur now.

Please keep your anti virus programs up to date and active and do not

open any attachments purporting to come from me or from this group . I

normally post images and similar things on web pages and send a link

rather than an attachment .

Peggy
