I must also suggest that anyone who wants to correct a serious weight problem must approach it as a LIFE CHANGING EVENT. This means whatever it means to YOU. I sacrificed my " career " and took jobs landscaping and dishwashing. I moved halfway across the country, hiked mountains and completely revised my eating habits. It took a lot of " 13 steps forward and 11 back " living, but it is easily the most important and liberating thing I've ever done. Obesity is an epidemic of the western world and one should not feel alone. It is also a manifestation of MALNUTRITION...more so, I believe, than excess calories (the american obsession). The nutrient/toxin content of foods is almost never discussed. Obesity is an illness not only caused by excess calories, but by a build up of toxins in the body from taking toxins in faster and more voluminously than the kidneys, liver and the rest of the elimination system can get them out. These toxins often get backed up into the blood and can crystallize in between muscle fibers and organs where it can slowly toxify the body. Also, dairy and wheat flour products and other foods (promoted HEAVILY by the FDA and their bulls**t food pyramid) cause thick mucous to be formed by the body. Mucous is a breeding ground for viruses, molds, and bacteria and will normally flow out of the body as an efficient way of getting rid of these invaders. When the mucous is too thick or inhibited by anti-histamines it cannot flow properly and we get progressively sicker. The biggest wall to my health was my work. 40-50 hours a week sitting at a computer. Heart rate staying between 65-75bpm unless I had a meatball sub at lunch, then my blood pressure and heart rate would rise. My mental, emotional, and spiritual selves were slow and tired; Twisted & perverted at times. In most office buildings we lack each of the four ancient elements: no fresh air, no fresh water, no exposure to the sun (fire), and several stories removed from the earth. I did not and could not balance or heal myself. I was filled with loathing for myself (I was nearly 280 pounds)and a depression about what life was and not feeling connected to it. These feelings led to many forms of acting out and destructive behavior towards myself and others. Since then I have healed myself in many ways and feel more balanced and at ease than I have for most of my life. Here are some suggestions on healthy eating: - moderate, or (for some) eliminate, meat in all forms. Pork and beef products first and foremost, then chicken and turkey, then fish (I still occasionally eat fish.) This is not about animal rights, meat is an extremely complex material for your body to digest and is high in toxins (they, like us, accumulate a lifetime of toxins in their muscles) not to mention hormones, dyes, preservatives; but it is also loaded with vitamins, minerals protein and (in the case of fish) healthy fats. Organic, additive free, free range poultry or fish can be extremely beneficial, especially in a slow cooked soup or stew which " pre-digests " the meat making the extracting of nutrients (and, yes, toxins) much much easier on you digestive system. High protein fad diets these days are an abomination when they tell you to eat so much meat. Meat is not the only source of protein; nuts, seeds, grains, beans and plants such as soy and avocados (even sweet potatoes!) all contain usable proteins. One cup of cooked rice and beans contains the same amount of proteins and the complete spectrum of necessary amino acids as an 8oz. steak.. Even when weight loss occurs, your colon is paying a price for all that meat as meat tends to stay in you for a couple of days and turn rancid. Colon cancer is almost #1 and it is growing...taper off and if you choose to continue eating meat, then bake it or stew it and eat lots of fruit. Fruit is a cleanser. It moves the meat along - moderate and strive to eliminate all wheat flour products (standard pasta, breads, pastries, tortillas all have a wheat free alternative). Sheesh. This one seems hard, but let me lay some info down. Wheat flour contains a compound called gluten (like glue, see?). Gluten is extremely mucous forming and almost impossible to digest. It dehydrates you due to requiring so much h2o to move it thru. Also, to move it along, your intestines release a dense, slick mucous which inhibits vitamins and nutrients from being absorbed from anything but the wheat flour. Your intestines are the only places this uptake occurs, if coated with mucous, an entire day's worth of nutrients can slide right on out of ya. Also, the mucous hardens and locks in parasites (brought in by meat products and unwashed produce) and acids which can burn holes in your intestinal walls and further inhibiting the uptake of vitamins. You will notice that nearly all products made with wheat flour are enriched. This is because of the mucous. If it was not enriched, we would all be much more sick and tired than we already are. Stick with wheat free, gluten free breads and pastas, they are much easier to digest and provide amino acids and vitamins that wheat does not. -moderate and eliminate white sugar. Harder than you think. Ranch dressing has sugar. We are all well addicted to it and it has more psychological attachments than any other food. We reward ourselves with it. It gets us high (especially with chocolate). Do what ever it takes to slow this one down. Try 100% real maple syrup. It is sufficiently complex to where it does not cause a high and a low in the bloodstream. It is LOADED with vitamins and minerals and can be used in baking and breakfast cereals...anything. Honey is NOT a good substitute, it is refined (by bees) and has a preservative in it (bee spit (really)) and hits the bloodstream faster than white sugar. Stevia, another amazing sweetener, is also a healthy supplement for the intestinal tract and colon -moderate and eliminate dairy products. All dairy products are mucous causing. Cheese (GOOD cheese), yoghurt, and buttermilk are all cultured and have living beneficial bacteria in them. These are acceptable in moderation because they have nutrients and are a good source of protein and calcium. Milk (check out www.notmilk.com) has no beneficial bacteria, has pus from infected cow nipples and often leeches calcium from your body to be digested(I know this is counter to all the propaganda we hear, but check out notmilk.com for more formal explanations) -for protein: nuts(not peanuts-peanuts are beans and are covered in mold these days...stick with almonds first then cashews or macadamias; all come in 'butter' form as well), beans and rice, soy (beans), cheese and yogurt. Soy milk is very healthy especially for women and taste great with cereal (there is evidence lately that soy is NOT that great and that it's phytoestrogen chemicals may do more harm than good; research it first). -instead of wheat: eat long grain brown rice(all other rices are inferior), corn, wheat free breads, corn tortillas and rice or corn pasta. -increase fruits and vegetable intake as much as possible. for veggies:if it grows above ground it is low-cal, below ground is hi-cal. -not every meal has to be to your liking. Eating is to nourish you and does not ALWAYS have to be a feast (or even TASTE that good).
