Guest guest
Every time I re-read this story of Doc's, I think of the old Indian parable. I've actually heard several versions of it, but one goes that a seeker wanted to achieve enlightenment. When he approached a master to ask him to help him achieve this, the master asked him just how much he wanted to achieve this. The student hemmed and hawed, and said something like " very much. " To his surprise, the master grabbed him, threw him in the river, and held his head under the water. When he finally let the fellow come up for air, the student asked the master why he had done such a thing. The master responded, " How much did you want a breath of air just now? That is how much you must want enlightenment if you are to succeed. " Now, Doc might not have intended that intensity, but I am reminded of it.
