Crystals: Difference between fake and real

Does anyone know if there is a way to tell the difference between a

real quartz crystal and a fake (glass or whatever)? My brother bought

a crystal pendant. The packaging said it was a crystal but he's not

sure, it could be a really pretty piece of glass or something. Any

help would be greatly appreciated.
