Re: is a " pleasure " that is NOT good, or a " pleasure " that

is beneficial?

That was kind of what I meant. I have always had a passion for

learning, knowing, mastery (not like knowing when I'll die). I

remember in grad school having a training director who believed that

you must be humiliated in public to really learn.

He was not a fun guy.

I probably have some reaction-formation to the fear in the fear/joy

dichotomy. But I know that in grad school, there was

so much stimulation and excitement in being surrounded by

interesting, smart people that joy kept me going most of the time.

Once it got into the real grind--4 or 5 years into it with the

dissertation and having to grovel for the committee, there were

times that what kept me going was that all that suffering had to

bring me something wonderful or it would not have been worth it.

I think of addiction as attempt to avoid pain, but I think I know

what you mean. Most addicts try their whole lives for the ultimate

high and never get one. They often say they never felt " normal "

until they had their addictive substance.

I think a lot of the people on this list are addicted to and get joy

from your workshops, even though they also have to go through the

ordeal associated with it. From what you've said, you seem to have

a positive addiction for exercise and martial arts. Haven't you

followed your bliss?

EM is following my bliss, too. Every year, every stage of life has

presented a possibility of learning. Not all was fun at the time,

but all have lead me to here. It's nice to know that life has

awesome re-creation possibilities at all stages.

I've wandered a bit--kept getting interupted....
